Shoot or No Shot (with poll) NOV 2017

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 11 12, 2017 •  [Post 1]

Season: Modern/Rifle
State: Your choice
Hunt: Solo hunt
Weapon: The rifle you're carrying.

Ah ha! Its finally your time in the elk woods, modern/rifle season in (insert state here) and you've done you're job posting by this meadow that you know gets elk traffic as the lowland hunters push em up the side hill. Well, this fine fellow catches your eye, moving from right to left and is moving at the speed you see now across the meadow. He's about 80 yards out and will probably not stop until he reaches the timberline across the 250+ yard wide meadow.

Shoot or not shot here. Do you lead him and if so, how much? If you decide to shoot, please copy the pic to MS Paint, place a spot where your bullet will impact and if you're really feeling saucy, show a spot at about where you would lead him if you feel its necessary, save the doctored up pic and post it up on the thread.

I'll assume he's not at a full run. So if he is at an average pace he's about to be vac sealed! At 80 yards I wouldn't lead him with any gun. The bullet will be there instantaneously. On my phone so cant place a dot at the point of impact but Id go right in between where his front legs meet his body and just below halfway up it. Whammo!

NO doubt,he's dead elk . No need to lead at that distance at his pace.Full out run,I would not shoot. Aim at shoulder on farside, not nearside.

That looks like that dog trot pace that elk use. It is roughly 10 MPH + or - and they can keep it up for miles. At 80 yards, I'd hold dead on!

80 yards, darn right he's going down. Shoot for the off shoulder, right where the darker belly hair meets the side. You'll lose the off forequarter, at least mostly, but it ought to double lung him. No lead, just keep swinging with him and follow through.

Since it's Elk, I'll be using my .338. No lead, but follow through on the shot is paramount. 80 yds? no worries.
Yes, I am addicted to elk. No, I don't need help, I just need a tag.

The country there looks very similar to where I hunt in eastern Oregon. I know where he is heading by just looking at him. He is going to the ranch. Too bad for him that he did not get there the night before. He is going down now. :D

Nervous grunt or cow call. Then shoot. If still trotting, I think I'd unconsciously lead a little, don't want to hit behind the liver.

That bull is moving 10 mph is covering 15 feet per second; about 3 1/4 inches lead,
Unfortunately it took me until that elk was in the next canyon before I figured the lead.
So Ill just aim where the crease is in the pic.

Just like shooting ducks on a crossing shot at 20 yards... Swing with the elk, squeeze the trigger, keep swinging through the recoil. Oh yeah, no lead necessary here.
