Elk Hunters: What Are You Shooting?

Postby Swede » 12 02, 2017 •  [Post 1]

Gun, bow, muzzle loader, what are you carrying when you go out after the wily wapiti?

I have a Mathews Halon 32 set now at 63 lbs. draw weight. My arrows are carbon that weigh about 412 grains with a 100 grain broadhead.

BTW: I saw about 150 elk today including about 20 bulls. Four or five of the Roosevelt bulls were carrying some heavy head gear.

Mathews Halon with carbon arrows that weigh in at 437 grains and a 100 grain Slick Trick. However, I might try a different broadhead because they just don't seem to shoot as good as the field points.

Rifle: 30-06 AI with 168 gr Barnes TTSX @ ~3000 fps. Gun is an early model 70 handed down from my great grandpa.
Image

Bow: Was shooting a Dan Toelke Whip longbow, 62" 70 lbs @ 33" draw. (700 gr arrows, with Simmons TreeSharks on the business end), getting a new 64" recurve from Dan soon that will be 65 lbs @ 33" and I don't know what the arrows will tune out at yet (guessing almost identical though).

Mathews Switchback maxed out to 73 lbs which I wouldn't pull if I didn't use a Winns Free Flight release. Easton AC Slim arrows with Slick Trick heads.

Remington AWR (Alaskan Wilderness Rifle) in .300 Ultra Mag topped with a Leupold Mark 4 in 6.5-20X50mm scope and launching 200 grain Nosler Accubonds. I like to perch it on a Caldwell Dead Shot Field Pod.

Mathews Chill R @ 72lbs
480gr gold tips with magnus ser razor heads.

I will be hunting a different bow next year, depending on how my recurve shooting goes, it will either be a blacktail recurve, or a Mathews Triax. I will decide which to buy early spring. I will also be shooting 550+grain arrows this coming season no matter the bow.

regardless, I will own a Blacktail by 2019 and hunt with it.

For archery elk my set up is on 06 (07?) Mathews Switchback set at just under #70, Ted Nugent Gold Tips arrows with 100 grain Montec G5.
Other wise a Browning 7 mm A-bolt with120, 140 or 160 hand loaded Particians for other game toped with a 2-7 Redfield Illuinator scope.

But what I shot the the most is an older Benelli M 1,... shooting the cheapest steel shot load I can find in BB for goose or #3 traveling over 1450 ft per second.
And yes that gun has been elk hunting. or should I say it was in the goose blind on a field where the elk and geese shared time with a proper load for elk in my blind bag.

Based on the tag I grabbed earlier today, it looks like my Darton will have a hietus in 2018 at least in the tato state. Not sure if I'll use my Vanguard II .308 next SEP or one of my partners 300 WIN MAGS. We'll see.

Will it be your first time looking at an elk through crosshairs?

For what it's worth, I watched my buddy put a neat little 3 shot group behind the front shoulder of a roosie, the bull was 373 yds, only recovered one bullet, and that was an 18" barrel. Premium bullets, and normal shootin' range, a 308 will do the job just fine. I was impressed 2 bullets went through at that range from an 18" barrel.

Any details on this hunt?

Ya, it's been more than a handful of years since I've actually hunted elk with anything except archery gear; I'm kind of excited to change it up come next fall. Not much to say about the hunt at this point except its an ID wilderness area. Let the research, planning, scouting, and conditioning begin!

Shooting, not so much. Carrying a Browning A-Bolt in 7mm Rem Mag with a Leupold 2-7 scope and Remington factory ammo. Next year I'll have time to work up a .375 H&H load and carry my Whitworth Express. I couldn't afford to feed it factory ammo. Although, for all the elk I'm seeing I could just carry my Redhawk- it's a lot lighter.

well....my birthday was the other day, fished the morning, but left the river early to hang out with my wife and daughter, we didn't have any plans, so I suggested we go to the valley, go do some shopping and eat dinner....something to do, plus I could stop at the archery shop to shoot a couple 18' flagships.

archery shop was the first stop, first bow I shot was the one I was most interested in, the new Mathews Triax, it hit peak weight a little different than I was used to, but was really smooth, but at the shot was where the magic happened. zero noise or hand vibe, and it just sits there after the shot. I shot it a few times and lost interest in all other bows.

my wife sees the look on my face when I set it down, and she says "you're taking that bow home tonight, because if you don't, i'm going to have to listen to you obsess about it until you get it" she knows me well!

I had ZERO intentions of buying a bow, and had every intention of shooting the rest of the bows, but I had a different first impression of that bow than any bow I have ever shot, I was actually wowed.... so I guess this is my bow until I make the switch to a Blacktail recurve.

it is the most fun bow I have ever shot, and is easier to hold on target than any bow I have shot. crazy forgiving for the specs, I never thought this short of a bow could shoot accurately so easily. it usually takes me a bit to warm up to a bow, this one felt instantly natural, and shot as good as my chill r right off the bat. the specs seem like going backwards in accuracy, but it's the opposite, I can already shoot this bow better than my chill r, quite amazing.

Roosie, I think you will find another amazing thing: It will most likely be very easy to tune with broadheads. Mine took no adjusting. Oly said his as very easy to set up.

did that day 1, and it was very quick and easy! took about 4 shots at 40 yds to get broadheads shooting with field points.... I can't put this thing down :D I may have to put the rifle up for 2018 (except for lions) and kill everything with this bow, awesome shooting bow, and fun as heck to shoot. I have it backed off to 66lbs now since I have a broken rib on my right side, it still hurts to draw, but it's doable with the limb bolts backed out a turn.

I swapped out the sight since I took that pic, I was looking around Ebay a few days ago and found my favorite sight of all time, new in the package! I don't think they have been made in like 10 years. it's an APEX bone collector, it's micro adjustable (tool less) it's a 4 pin, top 2 pins are .019, bottom 2 pins are .010, and they are all green, and are all in little stainless steel tubes, so the fiber optics can't break. my original one I hunted for several year, and absolutely loved it, really light, and bomb proof, it got stolen on a bow a few years ago, been looking for one since, and struck gold!

I like my spot hogg real deal, but not as much as the sight that I just got. I have the Triax accessorized exactly like my favorite bow I have ever owned, and this is the first bow I have had since that one that I REALLY like.....did I mention it's fun as heck to shoot? :D

I hunt with a Browning X-Bolt Stainless Stalker in 7mm Remington Magnum. I've hunted and harvested with Remington Premier Core-Lokt Ultras (160 gr), but since I started reloading I'm transitioning to Nosler Partitions (160 gr). A Leupold VX-3L 4.5-14 x 50mm sits on top of the Browning.
