Shoot or No Shot 2018, Episode #5

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 03 06, 2018 •  [Post 1]

Location: Somewhere in the elk woods
Hunt Pressure Status: It’s not a sea of raging orange, but there are other hunters in this general area.
Hunt: Solo Hunt
Date: Third week of October
Time: Mid Morning
Tag: Modern firearm; any branched bull

Pretty nice that the few days of heavy snowfall have let up and now, you have a clear day when the elk are definitely moving! After you climb up a steep little shale hillside to look down into the small flat valley that lays between two major basins (on the other side of the hillside you maneuvered up), you immediately see these two fine fellows looking back at what probably is the echoing sound of the bit of noise you made scurrying up the snowy side hill. Safety off, rifle up to shoulder, and the bulls are a bit over 200 yards from your position where you stand on the top of the steep little ridge (its merely seconds if that before the elk do the hoof scoot boogie to parts unknown). Shoot or no shot? I'm curious to see which bull folks are shooting at and shot placement ;).

If you say "shoot", save the picture to your desktop and open in MS Paint, you'll be able to place a spot, X, or whatever on the critter before you save it back to a jpg and add the marked up pic with your post.

Not me. I'm holding off. Are you kidding me. I'll get a rest or use the bipod and take the shot. 338 W Mag sighted in at 200 yards.

One thing about shooting critters that I am reminded of. You should always know your shot placement. I like to check on the animal to see just how close I was to hitting exactly where I aimed.

Looks like the bull on the left has a couple more pounds of meat-that's the one I am shooting.

200 yards with my 7 mag is a slam dunk on either one of them. Swede is spot on with his shot placement and Ishy is right about the left one being a bit larger body wise. Can't go wrong with either one unless you are strictly a trophy hunter. BANG!

Assuming I have an unfilled tag :o The look like they are looking at something else. Im extending the by-pod, sitting down and aiming for the 5 o-clock position of Swedes red dot.
My 7mm A-bolt, 160 Accubonds are zeroed at 250 . goodbye top of the heart.

I'm dropping to one knee, centering the scope on Swede's dot, and pulling the trigger! No way I would pass up that opportunity. As a side note, if I feel like I have more time, I may drop my pack and rest my rifle while laying prone.

Same as Swede 's shot, maybe back 2". Not the bull on the right. That front leg is positioned a little too far back for my liking. If he was by himself,I might reconsider, but would put a bullet in his spine just where the dark brown hair meets the cream colored hair and where the bottom part of the shadow of his head meets the brown mane. @200 yards with my shooting sticks and it's a dead Bang Flop elk

I'm shooting exactly where Swede marked. The bull on the right makes for lighter pack loads :-) and I like the width on the rack.

I don't get it R.J.... Is this a trick?

The one on the left caught my eye with his shiny coat, so he's going down! 3" high at 100, 4" high at 200, dead on at 300", hence my low aim.

If I'm at the end of the hunt I would go with swedes shot. But, a rifle hunt, good chance these two bulls walk away from me. Oh! Wait a minute I just noticed there is a third bull In the picture. I'll shoot him, he's the one in the top right corner of the original post! 8-)

Feel free to fire away but these two could booger out at any second. I'm estimating 200 in my head, but for this Michigan boy it could be 230 or 175. Either way I may only have 1,2, or 3 seconds to get a shot off. I going to leave room for error. On the other hand if they are just milling around not hearing me or seeing my movement I'll take the time range them and Swede is right on.

i'm not shooting off hand, prefer to drop the bipod, if not an option, I will need to at least sit, lock me elbows inside my knees so i'm steady @ 200 yds. here is what bull i'm shooting, and where.

What Wyo said! At that distance I don’t need to set up my Caldwell gun rest. I’m dropping my pack getting into a prone position and breaking out the TagBags....
