What did you do today to prepare for 2018 elk hunting?

Postby Navesgane » 05 01, 2018 •  [Post 1]

What did you do today to prepare for the upcoming season? It will be here before we know it. I climbed 18 ski lift towers and did inspections on them and hiked a few miles along the way. Let this be a log of your daily/weekly endeavors to prepare for the upcoming season!

Did a bit over two miles with weight on my back after work tonight. Gotta keep the ruck hikes rolling, add more weight to pack, work in more elevation changes, and start mixing in treks with mountain bikes a few days a week soon. Timely thread Navesgane, heck...scout trips are really only a handful of weeks away.

Sunday, 45 minutes of climbing without pack. Today 10 intervals on Mtn. Bike. Been doing 3.5 miles and 900' of elevation with weighted pack. Need to start increasing weight of pack and decreasing the weight of me!

Navesgane, sounds like a cool job to be able to get in some training at work. How often do you get to do that?

A few times a year I get to climb all the towers. When corrective maintenance is needed I climb one or two a day, which is typically once a week or so.

More weighted pack for 3.5 mi x 900' climb. Snow is now melted enough to go offroad off trail. Easing back onto the mountain bike. Will start interval workouts soon also. I plan to mix short 30 minute ten rep. interval workouts with long multi mile pack walks and longer bike rides.

Tomorrow a.m. going to hike a few miles in (up) to a camera that needs fresh batteries. Packing in a 25lb brick of minerals too. From there ill be going a few more miles to a moose wintering area and going to scour it. Hopefully be packing out a heavy load of antlers. Going to be an all day deal, maybe 15 miles total. Planning on being sore this weekend. This is the place.

Congrats!!! I really need to get going on that... need to lose right around 20 lbs

I have been super busy, I have started a new business and so I can hopefully be done with my other job in a month or two. If the new business works out the way I'm hoping should have more then double the amount of time to hunt this year then in years past. It's a lot of work all to get more time for hunting :D oh, and the family of course

Newbie here. I'm building new arrows as I'm picking up my Doug Knight recurve again. I drew a tag on the east side of the crazies where I have access to 54 sections of private. Pretty excited, lots of bulls, two other guys tops. Hopefully my buddy from ID will come call for us. My wife drew too, it'll be nice to be out front shooting again, I've been calling for her for the last 10 years.

Well, got an early start this morning on my hike. Checked gps when i got back to truck. Hiked 14.0 miles. First several miles of which was 1500ft elevation gain with a 25lb mineral block (among other things) in my pack. Got back to the area i was hoping to find moose paddles, and they had clearcut the crap out of it. Found one old paddle that had been run over by a skidder and smashed into several pieces. Did pick up 29 ticks though, some consolation prize.

Did “wax on, wax off” for a few hours on old red today for her first car show appearance of the year tomorrow. Spose that doesn’t qualify for elk hunt prep but the old gal is sparkling ;). Taking the dogs for some hiking laps on the prop in a bit though.

Shot the bow some and loaded my pack and headed to the woods. About an hour in felt something behind my left knee. Checked and sure enough had a deer tick working his way into the skin. Had to cut the trip short and head home to dig the little bastard out.

18,000 step days on both Sat and Sun. Did some food plot work for whitetails and pheasants. my boys shot suckers in the creek. 2.5 mi with a 30 lb pack on this morning.

My worst wood tick encounter was in Lake Sakakawea state park in North Dakota. Went for a walk with my dog and my wife. Half way we had about 20 running up our legs. It was sooooo bad. Got back to the camper and proceed to pick more than 500...yes, 500 off the 3 of us. We had a pie plate half full of dead ticks. I think the dog had by far the most, but we had plenty. After that my wife really doesn't like ticks. It was so gross. For days we would be sitting in the camper and a tick would crawl across the counter or something. Amazing how they can hide.

RJ, nice picture of Ol' Red, but we all know that is an old picture. It was taken before we so generously added the accessories! Post a picture with the wood panel siding, luggage rack, trailer hitch, Texas Longhorns on the hood, winch, and other things we helped you out with!

Damn heathens! Red did OK for herself (without the afore mentioned accessories) for her first show of the year on Saturday. Got 1st place in 60-69; 1st place in Chevy muscle car; and second place in participants favorite. She showed well and won three trophies.... I, on the other hand, just sat on my haunches and drank foo foo coffees all day ;). I did weed beat half of W WA yesterday (Sunday) so I guess that is some kind of a workout. Back to rucking with weight after work today... gotta keep it going or I will perish on the mountain.

Another day of shooting and hiking for me. I am feeling better about my shooting already, but will use the time between now and hunting season to improve more.

Oh: Congrats RJ on Big Red. Do ya think a set of elk antlers screwed onto the hood would have brought in the first place trophy for audience favorite?

RJ congrats on the awards for big red. I think the elk antlers would look better on the side mirrors then the hood. :D Fo getting ready for elk season watched the herd of about 50 behind the office building mover over an outcropping to go from one gully to the next for water. It was a good lunch break.

I've been walking a couple of miles a day and trying to get out and shoot my bow at least once a week. I keep powering through the pain and trying to convince myself I really don't need shoulder surgery. I spent all winter in physical therapy; it helped some but didn't fix it. I'll probably have to get out of denial and into surgery after rifle season.

I am still hiking three miles a day, but now I am running up Heart Attack Hill. Most of the guys close to my age taking a short cut across the flat to miss that part of the trail. Will shoot again this afternoon. The elk want the best I can give them. They feel cheated if I have cut any corners. Nothing is too good for our friendly elk.

I called my brother in law and discussed with him plans. He just finished med school and his job starts this summer so he won't know what days he can have off this fall... I also gave my notice today at work and I am starting a steam cleaning business. Hoping and praying things work out, if they do it could be a fun season :D

Some laps on the track and a few rounds of stadium stairs with weight on my back on post. The dang Rangers are training in my normal hiking area for another week so I’m improvising.

I'm impatiently waiting for the draw results for Oregon. I wish the had their draw in April so we could plan sooner for our hunts. Anyway I am still hiking daily and shooting every other day.

Worked the mountain bike into the conditioning mix. Rode close to 3 miles yesterday on some varying up/down gravel roads on the Army post I work at; got a pretty darn good leg burn from that! Gonna go with biking three days this week and hiking two with weight on my back for the time being.... Scout trip #1 is just over a month away; gotta keep rolling with conditioning or this old hunter is gonna be hurtin' for certain ;).

I went on me three mile hike again yesterday. I will be heading out for another in a few minutes. I ran the full length of Heart Attack hill. That still sends my heart rate up, and has me panting. Drawing my bow still does not come as easy as I would like, on the first few shots. I know this is an age issue.
The other day I said something about the pain of drawing my bow to my neighbor and his son. The son said our muscles lose strength when we get old, but I have not noticed that myself. What I am experiencing are joint issues. They just don't feel right and can have pain if I am not careful. Anyway, I still have 2-3/4 months to prep.

Well, I will admit I have been slacking lately. The wife and I have listed our home for sale and have been working toward the purchase of a new home. I've been a bit of a bum since the beginning of our Turkey season.
Walleye fishing has kept me occupied a little as well.

Took a nice hike with a backpack full of trailcams tonight. Time to get back to work.

I did my daily 3 mile hike and shot my bow again. It was very windy, but my shooting out to 40 yards was good. I'm not 100% ready on my shooting yet, but am close. I need to dial in the broadheads to make sure everything is well tuned.

My first 18 shots were excellent at 40 yards. The next 6 were ok-good. I am feeling good about my shooting. With joints that for weeks were sore, and muscles that were not up to their former condition, I was starting to worry. I am fine now. I can come onto the bulls eye and hold and comfortably release my arrow. :D

I hope your shoulder get well real soon too. I am looking forward to seeing you, a cheesy grin, and a big bull. I have shoulder problems that come around too. I don't know what brings it on, but have found it best to let it heal up, and not strain it until the soreness goes away. It just gets worse if I continue shooting my bow. Fortunately it only takes a couple of weeks to be ok if I back off right away.
I have gout, arthritis and enough old cracks to make the bones around my neck look like a spiders web. When they start to act up, I just leave them alone. :D

Another day closer, I drew a bull tag here in Idaho this year so I won't be archery hunting. But my wife will be so I'm going to be able to focus on just helping her. Made a list today of all of the things I need to get done before August 30 rolls around.

Also after 13 years in my career, last month I switched jobs, it's kinda weird learning a knew job but I should get more days of hunting in so I'm excited about that.

Will ride the mountain bike after work today, but, spent FRI-SUN (THU and MON travel days) this past weekend scouting a new hunting area in the spud state (5 to 8K elevation) in the high country. Felt pretty darn good on the hikes but that is without a pack full of boned out elk ;). Will continue the conditioning process; got a ways to go till I'm in true elk hunting shape 8-).

Do treadmill 3-4 times a week. Shoot my bow 6-12 times a day. Going scouting and checking trail cams tomorrow. About 3.5 miles each way. Will be good to get back into the woods! Prosate cancer in my spine is kicking my butt. Testosterone is only 9 with a normal range of 250-1100.

If prostate cancer wasn't so serious, that comment would be funny. At least your prostate, your spine and your butt are all in the same area. :D Can they get rid of the cancer with an operation or the radiation seeds? Anyway, I hope you are able to beat the problem, and keep on hunting. Please keep us posted on how you are doing. I am a prostate cancer survivor, and pray you will be one too.

Still doing my daily three mile hikes. Yesterday I was out with my spotting scope to help guide me in adjusting my bow sight. That is a problem as my target pattern gets bigger the longer I shoot. Still all shots were in a pie plate sized target after 20 shots at 40 yards. I will go out again and shoot while the scope is focused on the target.

I washed all my potential September elk clothes from socks, underwear to jackets. Everything will be packed in scent reduction storage boxes.
Everything except my boots.
My colder weather camp gear has been checked repaired and cleaned if necessary.
I need to reorganize the one bay in the garage so hunting gear will be easier to move in and out.

Determined hunting arrows, determined which Broadhead I will be using and started tuning, went through day pack and everyday hunting supplies/accessories, went shopping for needed items, ordered others on amazon, washed, organized, and packed most clothes, continued practicing callin.

Doing my best to MT bike 3 times per week and hike with weight 2 times per week (as long as higher priority events don't prevent my evening exercise excursions). Feeling pretty good but "not" in the kind of shape my old bones need to be in for the ups/downs of the spud state starting in....(gasp) a bit over 4 weeks from today!!! Hitting my WA area each weekend (new area this year) to try to locate/pattern critters (wapiti and deer). So far, lotsa deer but not so many elk :|

Hiked some old spots, hiked some new ones in Wyoming. Saw elk in both. The new area looks quite a bit better than I thought it would after looking it over on topos and GE. It was smoking hot out even at 10,000 feet even though there were a few snow drifts still hanging on. There were tracks on all of the pack trails and night time beds in the meadows. I saw no rubs at all. But the smell of elk was everywhere.

After day 1 my calves were TIGHT! Didn’t loosen up until day 4. Makes me think that some self inflicted pain just prior to hunting might be a good idea. It sure was good spending some time in the high country. Really good! I love the smell of sage and mountain air. Elk season can’t come too soon.

Ummmm...dude it's been thousands of years since the rocks down in big creek have seen the top of the nearby "hills" so I reckoned that I'd take em for a walk to see how it was on top...then I took em back down to the creek. I figured that was better than flying in the old brake rotors that I normally use for weights.

Opening day was fairly slow... called in a calf that hung around us at about 20-40 yards for around 3 minutes in the morning... saw several deer, but the calf was the only elk we saw... might be heading out again on Monday

the biggest change I made in pre season prep was kicking a terrible habit of 19yrs..... chewing. no fun for a while, but quit cold turkey 5 or 6 weeks ago.... done for good.

pretty brutal process for about a week

Between having a herniated disc in my lower back and doing some physical therapy to get me ready, I sliced my finger last night packing my gear up.(yes my broadheads are sharp and ready to go) Glue wasn't a match for it. Needed 4 stitches after a late night ER visit.
Probably the least physically prepared I have been for a hunting trip since starting to hunt out west. Hitting the road tomorrow morning. Good thing I have been practicing my calls, ill just bring them in closer to me haha.

Way to go Roosie! Very impressive.

And Brent, you can thank your lucky stars that it is on your left hand (I assume you are right handed). It could have been much worse.

landscaping and taking out boat lifts this weekend plus a 4 mile hike. Wrenched my upper back though, so I had to take a couple days off shooting the bow. But nothing serious. Much better now.

Congrats to you!!! That is awesome!!!

Good luck to all going out. My wife and I went out yesterday and got 67 yards from a little bear. Never did see momma, I'm sure she was right there but couldn't see her, they went one way and we went the other. Lots of elk sign around a week old. They had moved the beef cows into that area and I think it had push most of the elk out... is what it is I guess

Dang it boys!!
Wyoming is whoopin me!!
I had a monster bull at roughly 100 yards or so in the dark timber on day two and we were screaming out heads off at each other... I pulled out all the stops except I think I shoulda run at him more. It was quite the intimidating deal though because he was da man in a herd of 300... yes 300!!
Had a slightly less monster, 360, bull at 96 yards yesterday morning and almost had a beautiful bull come into my lane yesterday morning as well. Yes, it’s been good at times but... help!!
Actually I’m gonna post a new topic :/

Told my family we would be in the best shape we have been in by September. Doing circuit training three days a week with my wife, hiking 3 miles with 50# pack and lots of burpies and pushups. I have lost 15#s and my wife has lost 30#s. We feel great and I leave Friday the 14th to Idaho. Looking forward chasing elk for two weeks. Good luck all.

oh yeah, it is on now! Got the enclosed trailer ready by checking bearings and overall maintenance (why do they use T17? torx screwheads on everything?????? Why not something common like T25?). Started staging gear. Fever at high pitch. Why do I have to work?
