Frank Church River of no Return Wilderness

Postby NorthIDTLH » 07 10, 2018 •  [Post 1]

My wife and I are hunting the Frank Curch/Salmon units in Idaho this year. I'm looking for advice on where to base from, areas to avoid, etc.

Thanks in advance

I don't want to ignore you, but I have never been there. Sorry.

Never been there (yet) but there are some deep reaching trail systems to explore.

Salmon unit or frank church? Big difference.
I spend a handful of weeks in each every year. No idea why someone should want to hunt elk in da church, unless all of the other elk hunts you’ve ever been on have been too easy...

I've grown up and hunted in North Idaho. I'm looking to explore a new area is why I'm looking to hunt in that area. I'm gathering elk hunting the Church is difficult?

Got a buddy as a youngster who packed out of Salmon. My Father in law use to hunt some of Salmon and hunted some of FC.

Wolves have bumped elk numbers around. I expect if my health stays decent Ill do a back country FC hunt because it isnt easy.
Could take a boat ride and drop camp, of outfitted or pack drop camp.

You will need good legs and expect an incredible experience.
Had a waterfowl friend draw a coveted goat tag, he took a 7 days and 5 day hunt,.. stated it was the worse hunt of his life,.. but he had spent most of his life under 100 foot elevation

If your unit is Salmon, I went and drove around on ATVs checking it out, ill be there in October, it really rugged, hope your in shape. a beautiful place! There's areas that are road less that should hold elk & Deer! If your doing Frank church I don't have any information, if you want to pm me ill tell you the details
If you can't find me, I'm not lost. I'm hunting!

A quick comparison will find that the salmon zone is flat as a board with 84 times as many elk when compared to da church. That or I’m just trying to keep you away from the excellent and easy elk hunting in the Frank Church... ;) I mean how hard can it be...you can hunt elk in September with a rifle :)
