Colorado archery unit 55 wilderness hunt

Postby Ncelkchaser » 08 12, 2018 •  [Post 1]

Planning on mid September to the end of archery hunt in the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness near taylor park reservoir. Texas creek area. Anyone hunted this area? What to expect? I have always hunted up around Steamboat Springs and I realize its gonna be totally different. Thanks in advance for any help!!

I have not hunted there, but over west in 54.Presently all that country there is super dry and no campfires are permitted. Finding water sources will be a challenge, but up high the country is holding it's own.

If you see a legal bull, shoot it. Rag horns are the norm for 55. Be prepared to have a lot of ATV traffic - Taylor Park is very popular. You might try the area between Illinois Creek and Pie Plant, get above treeline.

Thanks for the information. Are the elk above treeline early morning and late afternoon? Dark timber during the day? Never hunted that high before.

As a general rule, yes. Above treeline early morning and early evening. Bedding below in the timber.
