Public Land Bugling?

Postby OsoElkHunter » 09 04, 2018 •  [Post 1]

Anyone out there hearing bugles and cow talk on public land? I wanna hear the general locations, not your spots or areas, maybe your units would be fair! Sound off!

Oso, your thread mentions no state parameters, and, we probably have as many, or more, folks here hunting other states than the Centennial State :D. Hang in there mister, they'll be singing soon enough where you're at.

Oregon coast, some bugling, but pretty isolated after the holiday weekend  bulls are mostly with cows though

NE Oregon, blue mtns I could get answered all day every day, no cows with those bulls, just spread out bachelor groups, and some antlers cracking. for being so early, it was nuts over there!

Probably heard 8-10 different bulls bugle a total of around 80-90 times each day opening weekend. Heard several hunters bugling early Labor day weekend and the elk shut up. Almost completely. Heard a handful of bugles Saturday AM mostly from a bull which was trying to pull me (or my cow calls) in - I just couldn't get the wind. Zero bugles Sunday. Heard one bull bugle 4-5 times from a crazy hole Monday morning.

On the way to work this morning I saw a group of 5 cows and 2 spikes, no bulls around.

Well I heard my first bugle today as I stalked a satellite bull at 150 yards and my caller called and a group of coyotes yelped out and spooked the whole stalk! But when my caller called out the bull called back! It was awesome!

NE Oregon - Desolation - First weekend was quiet although I called in a 5 point that came in silent. No shot opportunity.
Labor Day weekend. Heard 2 different bulls bugle at dusk and traveling down country. Otherwise, still quiet and saw one bull with 2 cows and a calf. Too far.
9/8 - 9/9 - Lots of hunter bugles. Elk seem to be quiet and headed for their hidey holes. New moon.
Headed out for a long weekend this time. Going to go into the ugly stuff and see what I find.
