Success!

Postby Kessler10 » 09 06, 2018 •  [Post 1]

Success comes in different ways to different people. For those of you that know me know I have been trying to fill my freezer for a few years now. Hunting elk in the back country with my bow. Lots of work, money, time and several very close calls.

From meeting Joe and starting with a fully guided hunt with his brother Doug a few years back, to getting tips from Paul, support from Rory, and becoming good friends with Vince who took his time to help me get to know an area that I have now hunted for 3 years and been back there scouting numerous times.

This year was a bit different as I didn't draw a permit for the area I got to know so well but my cousin Tyler did. He just graduated from ROTC and is becoming a pilot. I welcomed the opportunity to get him an elk before he went to flight school.

In the end the best opportunity for me to fill my freezer was to be the caller, so thats what I did. My cousin who had never been elk hunting before shot his first elk that I called her in for him (cold calling sequence). I became the person for Tyler (my cousin) that Paul, Vince, Rory and Joe had been for me. In doing so I finally was able to be part of getting an elk down in the back country, spending close to 24 hours recovering her with no blood trail, and packing out the meat from 6 miles back.

Ill share the full story later.

To me Im not sure it would have felt much different if I would have been the shooter. I guess I can tell you that when it happens. We split the meat of course and its a memory I wont forget.

Thanks to all that have shared their knowledge.

That’s great news Luke! It’s your turn now. I may have played a small part in your elk hunting career but there’s no question that you were bitten by the bug early on and your own persistence is the biggest factor.

What’s your plan for next year?

I love elk hunting as a team.
And yes, YOU were sucessful when the team was sucessful. It is almost more fun to be the caller than the shooter in my experience.
