My brother and I had worked a chunk of pasture with hearing nothing we were taking an alternative route back to the truck bugling every once in awhile. Around 10-10:30 we heard a bugle and started to move in. A couple more bugles and we had him
pin pointed a few hundred yards away in a bottom. We tried a cow calling setup but that pulled in two spikes and he didn’t budge but started bugling a bit more. There isn’t a bunch of cows in the area so I thought he would come in but after calling the spikes I figured he must have had cows. Anyways the spikes wouldn’t leave so we ended up spooking them off and they barked but I bugled right away hoping he would think it was another bull that spooked them. Anyways we raced across this opening to get closer to the bottom. When we were about 200 yards from the bottom he bugled and bugled right back. Now he was getting mad!! Cause he bugled again as we were closing in and I bugled again. Now I was about 100 yards away and he chuckled and I bugled and did some cow calls. All went silent and I continued down the game trail in his direction. Well he had the same idea cause we met on the game trail. I guess when he went silent at the end he was coming for me. My brother spotted him as we were moving in and I made a 50 yard thread the needle shot with my 338 win mag and he made it only a couple steps before tipping over!!

This is the first elk I have ever shot. Also the spike elk were the first two I have ever called in with this one being the 3 rd I have ever called in. I weighed all the quarters as I butchered him. Ended up going 508# freezer is full for at least a year! I have to offer thanks to elk nutt and his app. I have learned lots from it

It’s official... you’re an elknut! Congratulations man that’s a really nice bull. Calling in the 2 others really made for a great day. Keep reliving it and thinking about everything that happened because that’s how you learn.
