Rifle elk, who’s in??

Postby Joe Schmo » 10 09, 2018 •  [Post 1]

I’m in. It’s been 10 years since I gave it a go.
Sticking with the Newberg Post-Rut tactic of...find hell hole, glass, go deeper into hell hole, glass.
Plan B is to road hunt the hell out of it!!

I'm in. Got boomstick tags for both elk and deer in the Evergreen state. I "will" bring a blacktail home for dinner and will do my best to track down a dumb elk ;)

Good luck guys. There has to be an elk out there somewhere for you. Dumb is just fine. I never ask one to take an IQ test.
Joe: If you get a little snow, I like your plan B. Just watch for fresh tracks then go after them. On the other hand, I like plan B, never mind the snow. It just makes seeing fresh tracks easier if you have a little of the white stuff.

With my tag I can look for a spike with a rifle then any elk with muzzleloader since we failed in archery
I think we’ll try to get a spike for my daughter so I can stomp around in the snow with a mlc

Right now even the lower elevation is getting snow :D

You know I’m in! But I don’t sneak through an elks security zone until the bitter end. It’s hard not to get busted in there and when you do they catch the next plane to South America. I don’t need to anyway. The elk in Wyoming will be going about their business as if we all became vegetarians. I’ll be glassing them up out in the open and using the timber to move in for a shot. In the evening I’ll set up where I expect them to pop out but if they do what elk do they’ll exit the timber somewhere else and I’ll be back to stalking in closer for an opportunity. I leave this Saturday. Season starts Monday. I’m packed and ready to roll. Hopefully I can lose 10 more pounds this week. Eyeroll....

I'm already in, drew a rifle bull tag in Idaho, hunted last week for 5 days, elk were quiet and timbered up, snow and cold this week and I plan on being back at it this weekend. Seemed like every hunter that drew the tag was hunting the same drainage last week. Hopefully the weather and a drop off in hunter numbers gives me a better outlook this weekend. I also have a rifle tag for MT but won't hunt that very much if I kill one in Idaho.

4th rifle freezer filler tag, per usual. We can devour two elk in a year, so its great having a 2nd tag. I love archery season but love 4th rifle just as much. Cold, wind, snow, elk. Ahhh, paradise!

Looks like some snow this week for my area with temps in the 30s and 40s. Warmer with rain in Jackson. Next week is just perfect. Mid 40s in town all week with lows in the 20s and zero precipitation. Elk should be staying out feeding for awhile in the morning and coming out to feed in the evening with some shooting light. I won’t curse myself with any predictions. I’ve never hunted cows only right from the start of the season.

I leave in approximately 48 hours... The word is that the town closest to my hunt area has 6-8 inches of new snow today, though I haven't confirmed that, yet. The news came from a ski area, and we all know they like to exaggerate about snow totals....
If it is true, that will be the most snow before first season since I've been hunting that area. I'm not sure what that means for elk numbers, but I'm hoping it's good.

Hey Saddlesore, maybe the snow will push them OFF of the private ranch, what do you think???? Good luck to you, I'll let you know how I do..

Make every minute count. Never take the easy way out. Start early and finish late. Hunt to the bitter end because before you know it the season will be over.

Best of luck to everyone!

One more weekend with a bow then it's rifle season. I like killing them with a bow but like eating them too much to not shoot one with a rifle.

I was a more than a little discouraged after the first week I had on this hunt, now after a week of rest I'm really excited to get back into it, leaving in a couple hours and will be glassing ridges tonight!
