Seeking Cougar Call-In Stories

Postby rainshadow1 » 11 11, 2019 •  [Post 1]

Hey guys!

New here. I just wanted to post like I always do on forums, fishing for your Mt Lion call-in stories. Including accidental encounters. I’ve been posting stories on my site for several years, I’ve got quite a few compiled already. But if I don’t have yours, I’d like to get it!

Let me know!

Thanks!

Site update here...

I know RainShadow Game Calls is all about CALLING... but...

I'm going to start collecting OTHER Cougar/Mt Lion Hunting stories and posting them on this page.

Any hunting technique, aside from dogs.

It'll be a bonus section... the website is still all about calling them in, but I wanted to add this section.

Have you EVER legally killed (or tried to legally kill) a Cougar without the aid of hound dogs?

I want your story!

It's about hunting the American Lion, without Hounds.

So I wanted to add it.

If you've ever gone out to hunt a Mt Lion, and Spot/Stalked, or Tracked, or any other form of hunting... I want your encounter stories!!!

Even if you were hunting other animals, but had that tag in your pocket "just in case" I want to post your stories on my page!

I know there's plenty of stories out there, I want to start compiling them! Hit me up!

Ill be getting after it monday. I figure this thanksgiving weekend is the big event for the late archery hunters, so ill just wait to go stomping around the hills calling. Dont want to screw up anybodys deer hunt. We need some fresh snow anyway to make it good. Going to use this weekend to get all (okay, some of) my stuff done around the house that ive been putting off. Then i can enjoy myself in the mountains without that voice in the back of my head telling me i have a bunch of crap i need to attend to before i head back out to sea. Really want to bag a lion before jan 1st.

Boy that'd be a battle!

The guy I bought the Davis Lake spot from told me about seeing a Cougar dragging a moose calf across the frozen lake one year. I haven't heard about an adult moose getting taken though.

If Mamma and adult cubs were hunting together they could do it... but moose are so big... If that cat's alone, it might be an indication of how desperate they are.

In the cycles they go through (several decade cycles) when they overpopulate (then add in the wolves) and they over predate an area, the decline in the prey populations leads to a several year run of dying off by starvation and territorial dispute. That might be what you're into there in N E WA.

Too many cats (and wolves) in the region, deer go down... desperation leads to starvation. Yes, they balance themselves, they self-distribute, but that doesn't prevent the numbers from getting all wonkie in the meanwhile. Prey species and predator species. It's not the healthy balance we could manage into the area if we were allowed to. It's Earth Muffin management theory. It's idiocy. It isn't sensible from any angle.

Hey guys! Cyber Monday post for a GIFT to my former customers, especially you long timers!

Look at your call sequences files... If you DON'T have "Live Whistles S", I'd like to give it to you for Christmas. I think you should have it.

It's Live Whistles, but it's slowed down to a calm communicative pace. Live Whistles was a real life sequence, in real time, but it was a whining, excited, begging teenager. A little overexcited about seeing his trainers. I think slowing it down makes more sense in the field.

So if you're a former customer, email me a pic of your file list or the cd or something to prove it, and I'll email you a link to download "Live Whistles S".

Merry Christmas!

Thats cool he got it with nothing but lion vocals. What is "agitated feeding?" Is there somewhere i could hear that? I dont have an e caller, just curious to see what the sound is.

And ill add, one thing i like about all the call in stories is that it shows there actually are some people out there purposely targeting lions. I wish there were more people doing that. Lot of guys say they want to, and will talk a big game, but wont actually get up early and hike into the mountains in the snow when it comes down to it. Afterall, it is a pretty low odds hunt, and waking up super early to go out in bad weather for a slim chance of success isnt very appealing to a lot of people. Pretty understandable really.

Im just hoping like hell that with this crappy weather 101 wont meet its cougar harvest guideline, and i can draw 101 spring bear. So far only 2 lions taken toward the guideline in 101. I fully expect it to stay open through april 30th. Really would be awesome to go out calling both bear and cougar in april while doing my deer scouting stuff.

AFC is Agitated - Feeding - Calling. I compiled it using mostly the mis-trusting moaning growls from a 2yo female when she saw me with the trainer. He kept saying, "She doesn't usually act like this!" I didn't mind, she had my microphone on her collar! It's a feeding sound (eating), while growling (at me), and interspersed with lifting her head and calling to the trainer who walked off doing something else.

My only 'negative' sound, but it's not aggressively negative, it's intimidated and untrusting.

Would be awesome to get some April calling in! Warming up above 4000 ft here for the next couple weeks it looks like.

That cat knew what youre all about!

I dont know about 117, lot more hunting activity in that unit in general, but im sure either 101 or 113, most likely both, will stay open through april. I only put in for 101 spring bear. 101 is way below the harvest guideline. My cat was 50% of the hunter killed cats so far.

If i draw sherman spring bear, and lion is still open, the big problem will be deciding which gun to bring. Got my new .444 marlin for bears, but i dont think i want to shoot a cat with that. I think the proper compromise would be to bring a .308. Got a scoped stainless synthetic bolt action, and an iron sight wood / blued lever gun. Id much prefer the lever gun, but if the weather is nasty i guess ill have to go with the bolt gun. We will see, may not even draw spring bear. But i would love to be out calling both at the same time.

So many guys have asked me about callers and what would be a good unit for a budget, so I thought I'd just mention that today (March 20, 2020 3:15pm) I got an email from gander outdoors saying they had a sale on the FP Banshee for something like $207. That's pretty good...

Sorry I haven't been posting other stuff over here, the site rejects my pictures when I try... says something like it can't figger out what size they are and won't post them....
