Yikes. That old cat is out mid day. Is this spot close to a water source?

not that ive found. well, water is plentiful in the area, but im not aware of a water source in that immediate vicinity. ive gotten pics of multiple cats mid day, and seen them moving around mid day with my own two eyes.

always do. i just get super bad buck fever every time i see them. get butterfingers handling my guns. took 3 shots at one last year and missed. just get so damned excited its embarrassing. nothing else does that to me. another recent shot, this one was rght at twilight so the infrared went off even tho it was still kind of light out, so bad quality pic.

I know what you mean, luckily when I ran into one the nerves didn't kick in until after the shot but it was only a twenty yard chip shot.

took the day off from hunting and checked more of my cams. despite the fact that more than half of them were "creatively re-aimed" by bears in JULY, and have been pointing at the sky, branches etc for the last 6 or 7 weeks, still got a few more coug pics. and still have a few more cams to check. here they are. guess i should just call this thread "look how many f****** lions are around my house!" oh and guess what im doing tomorrow. bear hunting. got to knock down a camera chewer!

Probably a lot more often than we would believe. I wouldnt be surprised to find out ive had them sniffing my toes while i nap. Even after waking up to a bear creeping up on me i still nap in the woods all the time. Probably not a good habit to be in but i cant help it. So quiet and relaxing. Best sleep i ever get.

I really wonder what the cat populations are in Washington and Idaho
Neighbor kid has a couple hounds I was up checking tracks and saw tracks everywhere. It was about a mile from the Shoshone/ Bannock reservation I really want to spot and stalk a big cat

Im assuming the panhandle cat numbers are a little lower than ours due to hound hunting, but maybe not, you do have more sq miles of habitat. Either way were swarmed with them here. I feel the wdfw claims on cat densities are grossly lower than the reality. I dont know about spot and stalk but last november i decided to start following fresh cat tracks at sunrise. First time i tried the cat tracks disappeared in the snow and i found them like 15 feet away on the other side of some brush. The cat did a leap then j hooked and backtracked just above me a bit. Onky after the third time of this did i realize he was cutting back and watching me track him. After he did this a few times he went down to a logging road and walked along fresh tire tracks. I could barely make oyt his tracks, and after a few hundred yards i lost them due to fresh snow. I think those things are smart critters. If they know youre following hhem i dont think you stand a chance. Im going to keep trying tho when weather and work allow. One if these days ill catch one with its pants down.

oh i was thinking about that today.... have from 620am to 455pm to think up all kinds of unlikely scenarios. although ive had shots on 3 cougs in the last 2 deer seasons and managed to screw the pooch on all 3 of them. hell since im on this thread again heres another one, i didnt post before cause its a crap pic, but since i have all my other 2014 coug pics posted why not?

Supposed to get fresh snow this weekend, so I'm going to work my ass off to try to tag a lion. If by some miracle I can do that I will consider this messed up hunting season reasonably salvaged.

If iever get a real big one ill do a full body mount for sure. Small to avg one id do a rug. Ive had a few shot opportunities on them but ive managed to screw them all up due to being over excited. Its just a matter of time before it happens though i think. There are more than enough of them around, and i spend a lot of time in the woods

Hey Whitey, can you tell certain ones apart in any way? Clearly you have a lot of cats there but I'm curious if you have any way to tell roughly how many. :?:

Hard to tell for sure, just have to go by general size, head size, stuff like that. I get some that im pretty sure are repeats, but it is a lot of different cats.

have you tried calling? I feel like thats a healthy population, and if your hell bent on getting one, maybe using a predator call would do the number. I called one in here in co once while blasting baybee rabbit out of my foxpro.

I don't know powderhogg, his nerves keep getting to him, I think if he successfully called one in it would be that much more exciting.

I havent done very much calling. Im going to do a lot of it this winter though. I want one of these things. All ive really called in is coyotes, deer, and scavenger birds, but im going to step up my calling game, make it happen. Bought an e caller this year.

What are the regs out there in regards to the ecaller. I know you have to take a class to hunt lion here in co, I have not done it yet. I am running a cheaper foxpro with the decoy jack. I often use the brown decoy with a feather tied to it. Seems pretty lethal for the coyote and fox. I called a lion in 1 time with it, we met eyes at 20 yards and he vanished. Made for a nervous hike out.

E caller is legal, no special class required or anything, just have to buy a tag, hunt during season, no hunting with hounds.

you sure have a lot of cats out there!!! good luck when you start hunting.. ecaller will work best if you have a decoy set on it that is giving movement.. All the cats I have called in came with the foxjack on my foxpro.. anytime I leave it at home I get coyote and fox no cats

Well im spending tomorrow searching a mountain for a mortally wounded cat!! Not my kill, a friends, he shot a buck today, and immediately a cougar jumped on it, so he shot the cougar too but lost the blood trail. Apparently it was a solid shot though, so theres a dead cat somewhere on that ridge, but we had our hands full getting the deer out that was a couple miles into the mountains. And this happened to go down about a half mile from the cam on the very first post of this thread. To be continued....

Wow. I constantly hear rumors of Black Panthers here in Alabama but I'm not sure they mean cats...

Those are some cool pics. Not living in cat country I am totally in awe of those things. I'm sure you guys have a different opinion of them.

A couple days of crazy wind falling trees and torrential downpour wasnt helpful. The cat was unfortunately not recovered.

On that last post, i put up a pic of a cat on the 20th in my backyard. What i didnt show yet, with my bad eb service, was that it was a pair of sub adults that have been running around here, and thats one pic in a sequence of them chasing a deer through my yard. Well today, i believe i saw that deer. Little guy, like a 2 inch spike, eating apples in my yard today, and he has a big old cut running from his left shoulder down to his stomach. Only thing i can figure is a coug took a grab at him and hooked one claw in and he got away. Im assuming he was the deer running from the pair of sub adults in my pics. Theyre still running together cause theyre not proficient deer killers yet. Thats what i think anyway. Ill post up more pics next time i get my laptop somewhere with wifi.

Hiked in from another direction today. Holy hell!!! I have come across a lot of lion tracks, but nothing like today!! Ive never seen so many! One spot, in fact within a hundred yards of where i shot at one with my sidearm a couple years ago, was so trampeled down with lion tracks it was just unbelievable. That draw is a coug highway. Trouble is, the snow is so old, and its so damn cold, that its beyond my novice tracking skills to tell which ones were fresh enough to work. But 70% chance of an inch of snow tonight, according to the forecast. If we get even 1/8th of an inch ill be able to tell which travks are hot. Going to retrace my footsteps in the morning. Im feeling lucky

I went out the next morning but it snowed hard right up until daylight. Even the tracks from that night were buried, could only see round impressions in the snow, even harder to tell what was fresh. Been out on the boat since then. Spent a week just inside cape spencer hiding from bad weather. Lots of fun

Before i skipped town i checked a few cams on my place, got more cats. This time it was a big female with an almost grown cub. I also set up another cam on a trail i think the cats use, and set it to video mode, so i might get something cool on it. Hopefully ill be home around the 30th to check it out.

I just checked the camera behind my house on the trail the cats always use. Had cougs on it 6 times in the last week. 5 out of the 7 days, one of the days they were there morning and evening. This is ridiculous, i need to start sitting downwind of that trail dawn and dusk (or invest in some land mines.) Ill post the pics soon.

tons of great lion pics! it seems I cannot put a camera out without getting lion pics either...spring is my favorite trail cam season, I target lion pics, and get quite a few.

I don't know if you have or have not, but if you are calling for lions, I would for sure get the rainshadow sounds....actually his whole cougar package, with his tutorial, seminars, and all of the lion vocal mp3 files...that guy is a wealth of knowledge, and gives his sounds and info away for very cheap considering what it is.

I do have a hand call and cds from rainshadow. Steve knows his cats alright. I have a call in story on his page. Number 022. Heres the abbreviated version with pic.

very cool!

i keep trying and trying, did a couple stands today....the laws of exposure have got to be getting in my favor

one thing nice about all of these slow stands, all you can do is hold still, pay attention, and imagine a million scenarios of one coming in, i think i will be able to keep my composure when it happens....the first one i had a shot at, i was actually walking in to call, and 2 deer were blowing when i walked into the area i was going to call in, they busted up the ridge, and headed straight for me...they finally saw me, but wouldn't go back down in the cut, they went right below me and side hilled...i knew something was up and started glassing and looking...then i spot a strange shape with my naked eye, put my binos on it, and here is a big Tom looking at me, i dropped the bipod, and readied myself, and guessed range and shot....that thing got up and was gone in about 3 bounds.....i was so rattled! i have never had buck fever like that in my life. it was a tough shot, only seeing a little bit of the front shoulder and head....but the shot itself was really easy, i had a good 4 inch window at 141 yds...just blew it, shot high.

missed another last spring, about 20 yds...kind of a long intense story, but if anyone should have ever been mauled by a cat, it was me that evening...perfect recipe, but it decided to flee after a standoff, i was leading it through the trees, and shot a tree  turned out to be very lucky...will tell the full story later.

then 4 days later, i see another....this really was a tough shot, spotted it on an old road below a brand new clear cut i was on top of, my range finder at the time wouldn't range it, i kept ranging closer to me until i got a reading of 461 (the cat was 497 yds i found out this fall) i dumped the bipod, dialed in my scope and shot...it went airborn, and landed dead.

i really want to kill one on purpose now, my main goal for 17' is to fill my 2 lion tags...congrats to you guys!

our cat problem is fairly new, they have boomed huge in the last 7 or 8 years....i used to see a track once a year, or once every 2 years, now it is almost daily....everywhere. the main problem is getting close enough for them to hear my calling, sound gets drowned out pretty quick around here.
