Yote hunting

Postby Fridaythe13th » 01 11, 2016 •  [Post 1]

Been a little slow the last 2 weekend but the count is at 19 coyote's here in southern Minnesota. We need more snow to get them out of the big woods so we can start gunning some more. The 2nd one I shot had a short 6" tail looked real funny in the scope. It was -19 below zero yesterday when we started pushing section with no luck.

I drove and trapped in Wyoming to catch my first coyote
I caught my first southern Minnesota coyote in 89. A group of archers with a sizable lease near Nicollet gave me trapping permission in exchange that I catch some coyotes. caight 5 in four nights
Big , well huge coyotes. One hit the scale at an even 45 lbs

Way to stack them

Nicollet has one of the best meat market in Minnesota. Schmidts Meat Market. In the past we would take a car load of people to fill the freezer.

I'm trying to trap some of em here in NC but will probably try to call for them too whenever I have some time. Seeing if goat placentas work for bait/or lure.

He is a pointer. Wish me luck, the BIG YOTE TOURNAMENT is tomorrow (JAN 30) we normally have 40 - 50 people, the weather might get us. sounds like sleet tonight and warm temp. I like the zero degrees and sunny days they seem to be out more.

Tournament success, 48 people signed up. 10 yotes were shot which was more than I thought would be taken. 1st place was just shy of 36 lbs 2nd place 33 lbs and 3rd place which is the smallest 26 lbs. Our group of about 12 people shot 5 of them but did not place :( . All in all it was a good day.

Sorry you didn't win but it still sounds fun! I had a huge yote run by me 10 yds away the other morning while checking traps, I guess I should set for him now too.

Tournament done for the year. 51 people signed up only 6 shot but are group got 5 of them. The yote are getting so smart they run into a culvert or brush pile right away. Game over. 36 pounds was the biggest.

I'd call 5 coyotes an excellent day!

I've gotten 7 this year so far between snaring around the house and calling them. I called a triple in last week to 120yds and didnt get a one of them. I couldn't sleep that entire night cause it bugged me so much. Last time i missed something with a rifle was Oct of 2011 at 540yds.

Been there done that. Last year the 1st shot was about 80 yards couldn't believe I missed him, on the 5th and last shot he tipped over, I range him a 330 yards running. I still haven't figured that on out yet.

Our group is up to 58, it been a good year for the little amount of snow we gotten.

Havent even been coyote hunting this winter. :( left for alaska right after the cougar hunt, got back and theres just too much damn snow to want to do anything outside. And now its like a 2 inch layer of crunchy with balls deep powder underneath. Miserable stuff. Was reading last night about to fall asleep when i heard yotes sounding off. Opened a couple windows (no screens) and they were howling all over. Listened to them and scanned with my tam until my hands were frozen but they never came out of the timber where i could see them.

Never been yote hunting, but have always wanted to. They are murder on ungulates. I need to contact the farmer down the street and see if he would let me setup on his land, the yokes have been howling everynight down there the last few weeks.

That mountable to be used behind something like a red-dot or long eye relief scope? I have been considering night/thermal, what $ did that run you?

Its weapon mountable, has reticles, but mount behind a scope wouldnt work. Thermal imaging wont see through glass like that. Itll show the temp of the glass. Ive decided to use it as a hand held scanner, and use a fixed 6x scope with coyote light on my gun. Seems easier and less movement that way, as opposed to scanning with the whole rifle. Pic of the tam mounted to my rifle, then pic of how i have the rifle set up now.
