Coyote

Postby Mathewsz7-elkridge » 01 30, 2017 •  [Post 1]

I am under the impression that the coyote breeding season is typically in February. I have never gone hunting for them but plane to this off season. Does anyone have any tactics to hunt them in February and March?

Here in southern Minnesota we spot and stalk or push bush with 8-10 guys and get them running. Big woods mostly distress calling.

no..i think FEB march is the time the parents kick the pups to the curb.

this is the best time to catch the uneducated younger dogs.

That's a interesting tactic! In two weeks I will be going after coyotes for the first time just plan on doing some calling in fields. There's no way I can get that many people interested in going.

So when is the breeding time? I was under the impression that pups are dropped before fawns. They are normally be ingredients weaned of milk as the fawns are being dropped.

Breeding is in February. gestation is 60-63 days . Northern states pups are generally dropped the first two weeks in April.
Red fox should be in the heat of heat,.. go outside and listen for females

Feb = breeding season as lefty stated. For us, its the easiest time to call in coyotes. Their fur is better in December though.

Coyotes here in ks were spotting blood mid January. As far as pups go they usually get run out in November. Not all pups get run off though as some are retained to help defend there territory. I really like distress tactics earlier in the year messing October, November, and December. Not saying that distress won't work all year. A lot has to do with hunting preasure. When all the seasons start to open coyotes start to get a little more cautious. U just have to be a little smarter on ur set ups. But when January comes and the coyotes are a lot more educated I switch to howling. Coyotes are flat out ruthless from birth and start developing a pecking order. They do not like intruders in there area and howling is great change up when the distress starts to produce blank stands.

Also found several sets of cougar tracks, a few bobcat tracks, and these... which i like to think of as "really big coyotes." I followed the "really big coyote" tracks for a half mile or so, just to see if id find a kill. They were several days old though, and i lost them when they got to a big sunny slope where they melted away. Thats a .357mag cartridge in the tracks.

in IA breeding time is in Jan-feb, pups born in april
my favorite way to hunt them is spot-stalking, I have become very good at it, last 15 stalks I killed 13 of them, bummed the last one got away it was a lucky day for that big male. magazine failed to work correctly and I couldnt get a second shot off, that time i could have shot him easily twice before he got 200 yds away.
this time of year they are responsive to coyote calls, calling is a good method if in right terrain, coyote howls work good in Jan-march, and I guess rest of the year too.
I shoot a Tactical.20 4100fps, berger 35gr bullets
