Fantastic Family Deer Hunt!

Postby Tigger » 11 06, 2018 •  [Post 1]

Camp report from west central MN: My daughter had the morning of a dozen lifetimes at her stand. She had 15, yes 15 bucks running around her stand. 4 of them were really nice bucks and when she finally got one to stop and stay still for a minute she ventilated a really nice 8 pointer. Meanwhile, twin son #1, in his first ever deer hunting morning, sat all of an hour and a half before a broken up 5X4 came along at 33 yards. He promptly double lunged it and we had 2 bucks before 9 am. Twin son #2 didnt get a chance at a buck, but shot a doe that evening. My dad also shot a nice 8 that night for quite the opening day. There is an article about them in the local paper (echopress.com outdoors page if anyone wants to see it). Quite a special day for my family. 2 first deer and a first big buck for the daughter in one day.

Sounds like a great family outing. Loved deer hunting with the family growing up. Seems like I get to to do it less every year. Congrats to your children. You must be one proud and happy dad.

Looks like a great hunt! Next year will be my two youngest's first hunts (aside from coming with me), looking forward to it.

Awesome, looks like both of those bucks have busted up racks. Lots of serious head butting going on there already huh?

Yep 3 busted tines between the two bucks. And that is rare for here.
My other son and I had 3 bucks tonight within 60 yards and one was the biggest yet. No shot opportunities for him though. Sure exciting to watch them chase does that close. Too much brush in the way.

ohhhhhhhhhhhh! My youngest son was sooooooo close last night to adding a nice buck to the tally. He had a 110" 4X4 and a 135" 4X4 at 50-125 yards for over an hour....in the one place to thick to shoot. He did have him at 125 broadside in the open, but at 10 years old, that is too far for him and I wouldn't let him shoot (which he was fine with). I would guess 5-6 times he was waiting for that last step. One time, I gave him the green light to shoot if there were no branches in the way of his crosshairs. He said, nope, I can see a small twig in the way. Pretty proud of him for that as the buck was broadside at 50 yards. the bigger one stayed in the brush a little more, but that smaller one has no idea how lucky he was.

well he got a decent 8 tonight! great first buck! he ended up in a ditch full of water but we got him out. He made a nice 75 yard shot after I stopped him with a bahhhhhh. Then shot him again on a dead run at 85 yards. Not bad for 10 years old!
