CO Archery Buck

Postby Elk_Addict23 » 09 17, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Finally got it done this last Sunday. Back to work for a few days and then have a 9 day trip to finish my elk season here in CO. Good luck to those that have tags left!

Nice buck. One like that is on my bucket list. I have never hunted Colorado. I have 2 deer points though. I think a hunt down there could be my best chance at a really good wall hanger mule deer. I'm a research and map fanatic but interestingly... I have absolutely no idea when or where I want to try to draw. Everyone talks about point creep etc. I don't apply I just buy points only. I figure when I have about 7 points I'll take a look at where I might try to draw. it seems it takes at least 7 or easily 9 points to draw a top notch mule deer tag. Unless..... anyone care to help out an elk addict who doesn't have a clue about where to look for a monster mulie buck? :?:

I think I have 7 deer PP now.
Just going to keep applying until I decide what to do.
But GMU 21 is a good bet

It will be a once in a lifetime hunt for me Brad. I might end up with a big buck but I plan to hold out and hunt only where the biggest of the big are. Heck I could be 60 by the time I draw and that'll be the end of accumulating points.

I'll go on the couple forums I use and beg for info :) or maybe take a look at things like Huntin' Fool and Eastman's to see what they have to say. Maybe I'll just ask you! I'll be looking for the top 2 or 3 units in the state. Is that unrealistic? I don't want to die with my points either.

Now if THAT don't put a smile on your face! These are the kind of bruiser bucks we see in Okanogan from time to time. Have never shot one, but they are there. Congrats!

Thanks for the kind words guys! It really hasn't sank in not have I had the chance to enjoy him...YET! I've been elk hunting since I've shot him and have never had so many blown setups in my life. Been inches sooo many times but I still have 3 days left, just hope this wind stops so I can actually hear some more bugles.

Indian Summer - Let me know if you need some help, I'd be willing to share a few spots with you, all depends on how you want to hunt.

Hard! I love spot and stalk. I can glass, cover ground, whatever. The option for bow or gun would be great.

How many points do I need to hunt where there are bucks like that bad boy?

I've said it elsewhere and I'll say it again, SMOKER BUCK!!!

IMO don't sit on deer points in CO. There are plenty of units in CO where 2 points can get you into Bruisers. Most units in the state have that kind of potential and in my opinion you are way better off hunting a unit every other year (1pp draw) and hunt it 3 times vs waiting and hunting a 6pp unit once. But every case is different in terms of planning a big trip west.

You nailed it! I've not taken a buck under 160" in the last 5 archery deer seasons here in CO and all of these bucks came out of the same unit which only takes 1 point to draw.

Here is a pic of my buddies buck which was the buck with mine above. Green scores 174" and change and is only a 3x4. He was taken 5 days after I got mine.
