Muzzleloader Buck - Barnes Performance

Postby Old school » 12 22, 2015 •  [Post 1]

Shot a buck last night with my muzzleloader. Shot was in the evening at 157 yards in a light mist. Very impressed with the performance of the gun and bullet.

CVA Accura V2
90 grains of BH 209
250 grain Barnes Bullet
Federal Primer

Dropped him where he stood. High shoulder shot that severed the spine and the bullet lodged right under the hide on the opposite side. Its nice when you finally get the combination of powder/bullet/primer that your gun prefers.

Nice buck and nice shot Mitch! Holy smokes, those ML's can really reach out there and knock em down.

How far through the deer did you find your copper daisy?
On the moose I took this year I was disappointed in Partitions . The bullet separated at the skull and the biggest fragment only penetrated 12 inches, skull, neck muscle and jaw.

90 grains of powder behind 250 bullet,.. thats gotta hurt, when your not shooting at something :D
those Barnes bullets are pretty on paper too,

Nice buck!!!!!!

Lefty - sorry, I haven't checked this thread in a lonnng while. The bullet passed through the shoulder, chest cavity, other shoulder and lodged right under the hide. We found it when we were skinning it out and there was the bullet between the shoulder and hide. Believe it or not, the muzzleloader doesn't kick all that bad when you're shooting at a live target :-)

Nice buck! That buck is amazing! I love the barnes ML sabots. I loaded up a great and accurate load for my ML last year as I ventured out on a LE ML hunt in Utah. Used the Barnes 290 gr. T-EZ sabots and 100 g. or Triple 7 pellets with a 209 primer. I love how the Barnes sabots mushroom and hold together.

I used to shoot the triple 7 pellets and the pyrodex pellets also - then I switched to the Blackhorn loose powder last year - BH209 and will never go back. It's sooo much easier to clean up and also is more stable from year to year.

Good to know. So was your ML rifle equipped to handle the blackhorn 209 already or did you have to modify it for that powder? I've heard some great stories about the 209. Haven't yet had the opportunity to try it.

I bought a special breechplug to allow it to shoot loose powder - it was right around $20 if I remember correctly. I bought the one that Blackhorn makes for the CVA Accura. Some like the convenience of the pellets, I like the loose powder. I had never shot loose powder before either, just the pellets and I didn't like the crust it left or the big mess cleaning up.
