Tips for a first time antelope bowhunter

Postby Ben Nicholson » 08 22, 2017 •  [Post 1]

Going to try an archery antelope hunt in SD this September. Never hunted pronghorn before. The plan is to spot and stalk the first few days, if no luck doing that I'll sit in a blind. Any must know tips?

Thanks,
Ben

Tips for a first time antelope bowhunter

Go later season when rut gets good. When you riding around and you see the bucks that have does chasing other bucks off from long ways away, it's perfect time for a buck decoy stalk.

Also dnt waste time on the ones that are in un-stalkable terrain. Pass those by and find some around some land features that can help conceal your movements.

Their eyes are unbelievable!!!!!.

Even if they along a fence, you could do good by hugging the fence heading toward them. Then if they look you stop and blend in like another fence post. I've only been once, which was last yr to SD, but in three days I missed 2 and killed one. Bad wind caused one miss and I shot right over the others back.

Few tips I picked up on fast while there.

Have fun

As stated above, use land features to your advantage. Antelope's eyes are compared to the human eye with 10X binoculars!! Plus, their eyes are on the side of their head so they can see 270*. Simply amazing and almost unfair.

I have had great success during the rut with buck decoys.

If the weather is dry, find a water source and check it often. They will be using it. Blind hunting on a water hole for antelope is VERY effective if you have seen them using the water.

A well planned stalk.
Try out different contractor knee pads and new doe skin gloves.
Hunt in hilly or broken terrain,.. Just remember your stalking may need to start 900 yards our.
Expect to blow a few stalks, then learn from your mistakes

I spent some time in the NW counties.
What county in SD? if that is something you dont mind sharing
If there isnt much water talk to the locals and get on a water tank, if sitting in a blind , bring the reading glasses and plenty to read.

I never spent that much time in the south west.I did some trapping right across in Nebraska.
Should be good areas to stalk
