Arizona winter archery

Postby Navesgane » 09 21, 2017 •  [Post 1]

Gonna try out some desert hunting for deer this winter. Anyone ever done it here? Any advice would be appreciated. Getting my vortex 12x binos next month and practing 50yd+ shots. Hoping the weather will be campable.

what areas are you going to hunt in? When in the winter are you planning?
Yes, I am addicted to elk. No, I don't need help, I just need a tag.

Haven't really narrowed that down yet. Been focusing on my 2nd rifle CO deer tag but as soon as that's done I'm gonna start more research. Wanting to hunt 3-4 days in December and again in January, driving from SW CO so looking to hunt a unit that's close enough for that.

Will do thanks! Does the Sadona area get much snow in dec-Jan? I was thinking around 6a&b might be a good option being it's only about 6 hour drive from me but don't want to freeze trying to camp but I did recently get a 4 season tent that I want to try out. Looks like 6A is only open in Dec for otc archery and B is only open on Jan or vice/versa.

Most of 6 is high enough up that there can be a fair amount of snow...

Sedona itself will get some, but usually not too deep. The area around Stonemason lake might be good, there's a fair amount of coues in there. The area around Apache Maid mountain can be good, but it's hit and miss

I'm tagged out for 2017, but when 2018 rolls around, I'll have a deer tag and probably one of the left over javelina tags...

let me know and I will see what I can do to help you out.

Thanks! Sent you a pm. Looking into a border unit, any experience with those? I'll probably be solo and have been reading a lot of mixed reviews about border safety.

I’m hunting non-res and have plenty of deer at home in WA. So I am not hunting deer.
But I did jump a young white tail doe yesterday, while I was out scouting. Unit 33 east of the Rincons.

Thanks. All ready to go, just have to work tomorrow then driving down. The central units are about 6-7 hr drive from my place so that's where I'm gonna start. Been studying maps and researching online and hopefully they'll still be in the rut right now and active. If not I'll drive a few more hours south to a border unit. The weather doesn't seem to be much different between the two so camping is going to be doable. Really looking forward to it but kinda bummed my buddy backed out on me but oh well. Hopefully I can post something on the meat pole soon but if not I'm hopefung the experience will be well worth it. Are you a spot and stalk or water hole hunter? Hoping to get at least one S&S on this trip.
