ND Mule Deer

Postby BrentLaBere » 06 29, 2018 •  [Post 1]

Brother and I got drawn this year for Mule Bucks tags. Exciting times for us. Its been a 6 year plan in the making. Hopefully I can share the full story here with some great pictures. The badlands of ND are a beautiful place. Just adding a few pictures of the type of country we will be in. It will be our first time hunting Mule deer here in our home state.

I have another friend who was also drawn and he is pretty pumped. For those that don't know, this is a pretty hard tag to get and enjoys great success on some big bucks. Take us along Brent! At least in pictures and text. Or a few hundred of us could join your camp and tag along behind you while you hunt if that would be okay.

From scouting to the end ill take you guys a long. Hopefully have some good stories and pictures to share. Going to be a bit risky, but setting some trail cameras out could make for some good pictures. Last time I hunted out there was in 2012 with my elk tag. Joined a few other hunters that had buck tags but nothing like having the tag yourself.

What do you suppose the world record is for number of people sneaking up on a mule deer buck? I am thinking we can easily get 50. Probably 100. The good news for you is that we will all give you great advice and will be able to critique your every move. How can you beat that?

Just adding a few photos of last weekends scouting. Had a lot of luck finding good deer. Found plenty of other wild game too. Elk, pronghorn, whitetail and mule deer. Looking forward to getting back out there again. Set a trail camera up, excited to see if anything shows up.
The elk was a young bull all by himself. Pretty easy to call in. Had an older call in my bino harness and it did the trick haha. Brought him in to about 70 yards. Ill see if I can post up the videos.
Really liked seeing how many fawns were out there too. Great sign for herd health.

I drove through that country years ago on I 90, in November. I never saw so many huge bucks in the back of trucks, on top of vehicles, and on flat bed trailers. Best wishes on your up coming hunt. I will keep the camp fires burning around here and wait for the pictures.

Had a fun day out in the field. Saw plenty of deer and mostly younger bucks. Was able to watch a nice 5 point bull in a rut frenzy chasing and pushing cows. Had a younger rag horn with him skirting the herd. Looks like groups of elk moved through where I had my trail camera set up too. Quite a few good whitetails and one mystery buck. Ill post it up and see what you guys think.

Nice whitetail moving through. I liked this heavier one. 5 point frame with a little extra off the second tine.

Opening weekend was here. My younger brother and I hit the road bright and early Friday morning to do some glassing before the season started. We found plenty of does with the younger bucks sizing each other up. Ventured off the road to see what was over the hill. Turned out there wasnt much...
The temp was 9 below with some strong winds. Hard to sit still very long. Turning up a good whitetail buck and a small mule chasing does, we were on to our next spot. That evening was pretty uneventful and only turning up one buck. The high winds had the deer low in the valleys below. Not much movement going on so we heading back to the truck at dark with high hopes for the next day.

New country with some snow cover made for perfect conditions. Wasnt long before we starting spotting does. Plenty of deer bedded up which we found pretty odd for the time of day/year. Finally a good buck was spotted. We had spotted him moving across a flat and expecting to cut him off we split up on two different buttes. After waiting some time we figured we had missed him. My brother had waved me over to his location to use the spotter and get a closer look at one bedded.
After we get a better look at him, its time to formulate a plan. No hesitation, were going in.

We debated for a while on what the best direction would be to take. The wind was in our favor. 3 different approaches to chose from but this is rough terrain. The conditions made it even hard to move in. A plan was in place for my brother as it was his only weekend to get out. We were about 600 yards away. He figured he close that distance in half for a good shot, which required about a mile hike..... I cant emphasize enough on the terrain. Being it was his first ever stock on game like this, in country like this, he went up and down a few spots before he realized he wasn't in the right location. On the last effort to make it up a slick side hill he must have made enough noise for the buck to pick up something he didn't like. He stood and scanned the area before leaving us. The buck was out of sight and we were disappointed. Very surprised that buck was able to pick something off from that distance. Its certainly possible the wind swirled. But we will never know.

The evening hunt was a good one but I just didnt see the deer I was after. Wishing I could have traded places with my brother, though. We had split up to cover more country. Both spotting a lot of game. After I had glassed a spot for quite some time, I was starting to get cold. Moving just around the corner for a different view I spot a fawn and a doe feeding on a bench. One more step to make sure im behind cover I spot a decent buck who is now chasing the two. Oh man! 50 yards away at a buck I know my brother would be happy with. The rest of the night was spent glassing does and bucks. Mostly younger ones chasing. The wind got so bad we could only watch one direction and slowly made out way back to the truck.

The drive out that night was simply what the day could have been. Also discussing how the standards are dropping coming in for his last day of the hunt. formulated a simple plan for the morning and gathered our stuff to dry out. The snow and wind made for some tough days. The goal for the morning was pretty simple and didnt take long to fill that tag. A younger buck was with a group of does. Not paying attention to the approaching hunters was his last mistake. Too much attention on the ladies. The buck was just at the top of the ridge and the well placed shot didnt allow him to drop to the bottom. After field dressing the buck it was an easy mile drag to the truck. My brothers tag was filled. Easy when you put it in perspective. The buck didnt drop down to the valley below and we didnt have to quarter him out. Also had nice soft snow cover for easy dragging. Always try to look at the positive things.

The rest of the day was spent looking around at new country. Legs were tired, clothes were wet and the wind was still blowing. Glassing up a few decent ones and having some does run across the road in front of us for the most excitement we had the rest of the time. Heading home to take care of meat.

A weekend of rifle hunting in ND isnt complete until you see this.

Hanging the deer whole in my brothers garage made easy and comfortable work.

Trying to coordinate with family and work it seems like my time afield is getting limited. My daughters birthday and Thanksgiving and trying to coordinate with work..... Friday is a day I can hunt! The weather looks rough, but its all I got. Hitting the road early I arrived to my spot with plenty of time to prepare. The forecast is calling for wind and snow. Plenty of rain coming down at first shooting light slowly starting to turn to big snow flakes. Glassing was very difficult. Spotting a few does early on but nothing with them. Moving to the next ridge line I take my time peeking over. 5 does and a good buck! They have no idea im there and with a good wind this should be a chip shot! 300 yards down the hill they slip just out of sight. I slowly move down and around the butte in front of me. As I peer over the edge looking for the buck I get busted by a fawn. She is pretty clueless as to what I am and we have a stand off. While im waiting for her to calm down I hear the loud crack of a rifle in the same drainage I am hunting. 5 shots in total and the deer start to act a little frantic. Double back on me and move up the direction I came from. Being too aggressive, and with the deer on edge, I bump them up and over the ridge. Dang... time to move on.
The snow is starting to come down heavier now and glassing is getting very difficult. I find a good perch and try to look the spotter with very little luck. Binos arent much help either.

In the tree line below me I watch a rutted up whitetail chasing a doe all over the place. Really good entertainment. This doe wanted nothing to do with this buck but he wasnt taking no for an answer. They had to be putting the miles with both of them panting for air with open mouths. No other deer spotted and just as im getting ready to move on a buck is spotted running right at me! quick look in the binos before he goes out of sight, he looks like a nice buck. Heck it looked like he had kickers on him. I get excited. quick decision that this buck could be the one! With the buck coming up the ridge right at me, he should come into the clearing on the bench 100 yards away. Im frantic at this point trying to clean out my scope. Tough to see through it with the water and snow build up. The buck appears and I had very little time to look him over. Hes on the move and my window is small. No time to size this deer up and im excited. Ive always said if a deer gets me excited hes the one I should take. Lined the cross hairs up and squeezed the trigger. I catch a glimpse of him hunching up and moving to the edge of the bench. slowly trying to walk off he tips over. Wow that was fast.
Walking up on him with a lot of anticipation, im not even sure what I have here. He was my first mule deer buck and I had set the bar high. Higher than this. I had a good laugh about it but there was small part of me that was disappointed. That quick look at the kickers turned out to be his small back forks. I know there are bigger ones out there and the long wait for the tag my hunt is now over. Bitter sweet ending really. The hunt was fun and the meat will be good. I take some pictures and start the dressing process. It was a long drive home that day with the rough weather conditions.

Quite the relief getting home. Should have taken some pictures of my ice covered truck. Cracked open the garage to cool the meat down and made do with a broom and small ladder to hang the meat! haha. Starting the butchering process and decided it could double down and start cleaning the head for a euro mount.

I have it cleaned out and sitting in 3% peroxide. Should be done by the weekend. Ill have to post up the final product. Hoping I didnt rush the process like I rushed the shot! I always wonder how good the mounts will be long term with the de greasing process I do.
