Fruit trees

Postby wawhitey » 08 28, 2017 •  [Post 1]

I have a few small fruit trees, and theyve been dropping fruit pretty steadily lately. The deer have been gobbling it up as fast as it hits the ground, so i went out and gave the trees a good shake. Apples and plums all over the ground now. Laying in bed with my window open i can hear them chowing down. Funny to watch them eat plums and spit the pits out.

Looks like they are on your archery range. Isn't that a Yellow Jacket target in the background? I have the same problem here. I have a couple of crab apple trees in the front yard. Deer love them!

You're more generous than I. I would be saving all that fruit for ME! Can't believe you are letting them eat Italian Plums!!! Dude, next August I'm driving to your house, picking the plums, and making jam or freezing them. That's just not right. Can't wait until my plum trees are mature.

The plum tree went crazy this year. Its weird, 2015 it did really well, 2016 it only produced like 10 plums, this year there were so many i thought the tree was going to fall over. Branches drooping like crazy, just covered. Ive never really cared for plums myself. The small red variety of apples on one of my trees are really good, but the other tree grows big yellow ones that are flavorless and mushy. The deer prefer the crappy yellow apples. I do eat some of the little red ones.

Thats a big no-no here. Of course if they come in to eat the fruit that falls naturally from the tree, theyre fair game. No big bears showing up at my place this year, just a few sows with cubs and a couple young loners. Dont know whats going on this year, no big bears, no big bucks, even most of the lions here this year have been younguns. Its the year of the dinks at my place.

nice property! looks like a peaceful location, and your deer herd looks really healthy, they all look like they are in good shape....I guess the weak ones don't last long around there with the kitty cats.

It is interesting to see the buck go from velvet to hardened antlers. I would probably have shot and butchered him, then gathered up the plumbs long ago and made preserves out of them. Venison, home made biscuits, butter and plum jelly would be great for dinner.

Nah. I shot a decent 4x5 on my property the first deer season after i bought the place, just to do it. Now i just feed them and watch them. A handful of them are quite tame. Several times ive had 120-130" bucks during season in my yard in broad daylight. Id rather go hunt public land. Only allowed 1 deer per year here unless you draw a special permit, so wasting my only tag by shooting a yard deer just doesnt appeal to me. But ill shoot predators here, and i let anybody who wants to hunt turkey.
