LED lantern

Postby saddlesore » 01 09, 2018 •  [Post 1]

Look into these if you need a small tent/camp lantern. Unbelievable how much light they throw. 3" dia, 5 " tall. Probably weighs 8 ounces.

Interested! Have you actually used one? How big of an area will it effectively light?

I have one. I got it for Christmas.

The way it works is you pull the center with the lantern in it up from the case. The more you pull up, the more light. Fully extended, the case and light portion is about 8" tall. I have not used it outdoors, but it lights up a 12 x12 room great. I have one of those Coleman LED lanterns that looks like the old red Coleman gas lantern and it is way more light than that and 1/3rd the size.

12 by 12.... That’s a “wall tent sized” room. Perfect. Only $14 on eBay and free shipping.

I have a couple of these little guys. Only weigh 1 oz, put off quite a bit of light. Has a little loop on the base to hang off a branch, and base is also magnetic, which comes in handy too. Keep one in my pack and 1 in my truck. https://www.fenixlighting.com/product/f ... 9-lantern/

Does that lantern have a dead or dark spots under it?

I bought a "tent" light, 27 LED's the hangs from the ceiling. I wrapped it up inside the tent accidentally too many times and wrecked it. LED are amazing

I guess it does. I can't think of any light that doesn't. You can always turn it sideways. It probably isn't too rugged, since it is a plastic case, but a lot of light weight gear isn't. For $14, I can't see a fellow going wrong

It throws enough light though, that you get a bounce back from hitting the walls.

I of course have not used it in a tent, but compared to my Coleman LED, it is far superior. I
'll be adding to my new gear for 2018

As far as a light for the tent I will be using this:
http://www.goalzero.com/p/422/luna-touch-led-light
I already have and use the recharge stick and solar panel (http://www.goalzero.com/p/253/goal-zero ... i-tool-kit) to charge my phone when I'm out in a spike camp. It's worth the extra lb. of weight I think.

Got my order today (two of them). Box and instruction sheet don’t have specs but these little lights are very bright!

I have no doubt this might be a decent little light. I don't have one yet, but I do have two of the Bell & Howell Tactical lights and can guarantee you, for the price they are hard to beat.

Because these little critters are such a great deal, I did a quick VID. Thanks Saddlesore for recommending them, well worth the 15 bones for sure (hell, you can't go out and get a pizza and a beer for that). RJ

Just a heads up... I read some reviews on this product. One said there is no on/off switch. Do you have to remove the batteries to turn it off?

Also several said that the wires that carry the load seem to be too light. They have gotten really hot and in some cases melted. A few others said that the batteries got hot and started oozing fluid. I’m going to wait to see what you guys have to say after using them for awhile. Wapititalk fire that thing up and leave it on for an hour and let me know if you had to call the fire department. Lol Might as well do it in a dark room at tell us how bright it is. Thanks

The on/off switch is pulling the lantern out of the base. I don't know about the rest as I have not used it enough.

Here is a You Tube review.

Too true! That one we ate Sat was over $16!

I got to see this lamp in person when RJ received them. He opened the amazon box and when he saw what it was he started wiggling around around like some 5yr old with an icecream cone. He scampered over to a draw and pulled out a few dusty, cobweb covered batteries and promptly put them in the lamp and opened it. Pretty much blinded the both of us when he did that.

Nice little lamps, and I like the way it retracts which actually gives you a way to regulate down the amount of light it is throwing out. There is no switch or dimmer as Saddlesore mentions, you just retract into the housing to lower the light output.

Lamrith.... obviously covering the bulbs results in less light. But when you push it all the way in do they actually turn off?

Yes they turn off just as they close fully. You can tell by slowly pulling open from being fully closed and they will suddenly pop on.
