Bugling Before You Get Into Your Stand

Postby Bowhunt3r » 08 10, 2018 •  [Post 1]

What are everyone's thoughts or possible experience with letting out a bugle before you get into your tree stand? I'm thinking since the season starts really early here in Utah (August 18th), I'll sit in my tree stand for at least that first week or so.

One thought I had was when I'm hiking in at dark, I could let out a bugle or two when I'm getting closer to my stand. Perhaps a nearby bull will come in a few hours later to check things out? What do people think?

I have had that work on occasion, but can't say it increases your odds of getting an elk at your stand. I have almost quit doing it even though I recommend it in my book. It seems to increase curiosity, so if I bugled, it would be just one short call. I would rake two or three minutes and splash 5-10 times at the wallow before I bugled, then hurry up into your stand and be prepared to wait an hour or so.

Great. I have been doing it constantly since it was a recommendation in a book I read, now I hear the author has changed his mind because of sound evidence. Guess it’s time for the 2nd Edition of that book! 8-)

Since I am hunting a new area and hopefully less call shy bulls, I will probably go back to bugling and splashing around before I get in my stand. It was just not working for me where Stringunner and I were hunting. Stringunner seemed to be doing things right. Maybe he should write a book.
