5.56 thick timber predator gun

Postby wawhitey » 01 17, 2020 •  [Post 1]

Oh yeah, this should do. 16" 7 twist 6lb 5.56 with a red dot. Should be good firing heavy for caliber bullets at close range for calling yotes, bobs, lions. Going to get it dialed in tomorrow, and try to get a calling session or two in in a nice creek bottom nearby, good bobcat habitat, plenty of coyotes. Fun stuff. Put a micro bastard brake on it for now until i can get my suppressor.

Hey, i felt it was totally necessary. After struggling to get the lion in my scope at point blank, i realized that i had to have something like this for the close up kind of calling i like to do. How could i not justify it??? Its a personal safety issue when ya get right down to it. :D

This is killing me. Just got the gun a couple hours ago. Broke her down, scrubbed her out, mounted my reflex sight, put the brake on, now i just have to wait until daylight and i can get on the shooting bench and test out a variety of ammo and get my red dot zeroed. But im tempted just to blast a few rounds off from the back porch. However, being as how i have a brake on it, im pretty sure it will wake up my neighbor. Her house is something like 100 yards or so away. If it was daytime i wouldnt think twice, but unloading a mag when i know shes in bed, probably not very considerate.

You’re a good neighbor. I used to have some hillbillies down the hill from me that used to start with their AR platform, “bump stock” 7.62s at all hours of the night, and, exploding targets. Glad they moved on

Being away from home as much as i am, and only having one neighbor, its important to be on good terms. She gets my mail, waters my nut and fruit trees, and keeps an eye on the place when im gone. In turn i plow her driveway and kill undesirable critters.
Also, her dog is a good friend of mine, so it would be akward if we didnt get along. :D

Damn this thing is fun to shoot. Think ill be taking it out in the a.m. for some calling time. Cant wait for the yotes to start denning up, having pups, getting territorial. After whanging away at steel targets at various distances, seeing how awesome this reflex sight / ar combo is, im having visions of calling in multiple coyotes, and how much fun it could be with this gun. I need a suppressor though, the wait is going to kill me.

So f as r it likes everything ive fed it other than hornady superformance, but those still hit minute of coyote, and a box of 112gr subsonics. Dont know what was up with those, but no joke, tumbling, hitting target sideways keyholing at 25 yards :o

Everything seems good, but especially the 77grn interlock hornady black ammo. Actually cloverleafed those at 50 yards with a zero magnification, 3moa red dot. Also the black hills 77gr match king shot very well. Of course with a 3moa reflex sight i can only aim so precisely. My intention is to t as ke the reflex off temporarily and mount a 4-12×42 scope on it to be sble to aim more precisely, see what smmo really groups the best. Waiting until i get snother box of those 77gr interlock. Theyre not on the shelf here in town, so i ordered another box today.

Mounted a 3-12x40 on mine and had my son drop a Timney trigger in it. The stock RR trigger was OK, but the new one is sweet for long range coyotes.
Son also gave me a .458 SOCOM upper for Christmas. Picking up a Burris 1-6x42 to mount on it. Can’t wait to get home to start playing with it. It’ll be a short range deer, hog, bear and Buick stopper.

Did you buy a mfg made can? Waits on those are 4mos I think?

If you are "bored" or wound up needing to expend energy and you have any access to a lathe you could always file a Form1 and make your own. I was hearing people get form1's back in a week or two? Always nice to have a backup as well. Form1's are every bit as quiet in my experience, though they tend to be a bit heavier depending on how constructed.

One thing to keep in mind. In my limited experience putting a can on/off can change point of impact. Might seem obvious in no can vs Can, but I have also seen some where the same can being taken off and put back on hits differently the second time. Using a reflex and up close it may not be a big issue, but worth keeping in mind.

I have a 450 bushamster upper I still need to build. I have not decided on optic for it yet though. Let me know how that 1-6 works for you!

Getting a high quality suppressor. The last one i got, for ny .22wmr, the wait time was a little over 9 months. Ive bemheard they have more people processing paperwork now, supposedly shorter wait times. Love the suppressed .22 wmr. The guy thats making my suppressor for the 5.56 (same guy that made the .22wmr can) is doing the shot show and has some stuff going on. Have to wait for him to make it, then i can get the paperwork going. I could buy one of his satin stainless suppressors, but i dont like shiny things on close range weapons, so ill wait for a matte black one. The time waiting for him to make it will be minimal compared to the atfe wait time. And man, if youve never shot a suppressed 22 mag rifle, its awesome. And with subsonic ammo its insane. But the subsonic ammo is more on par with a .22lr round powerwise. Sounds like a bb gun though!

Okay, paperwork, fingerprints, tax stamp, all that crap is done. Now i just have to wait an unknown length of time to go take possession of my suppressor. In anticipation of receiving my new can, i just ordered a bolt action .223 that i can use it on. So ill have an AR / reflex sight combo for up close thick timber calling, and a scoped bolt gun for more open stuff, that i can swap the suppressor between as needed, depending on where i end up hunting on any given day. This does create the problem of needing a bigger gun safe. But suppressors are awesome, so ill deal with it.

Well the suppressor is awesome, double awesome with subsonic ammo, but so far the subsonic stuff wont cycle my ars, so its only useful in my bolt sction .223. Nedmed to maybe adjust my gas blocks, or replace buffer springs or go with lighter buffers to cycle ss ammo in the ars... need to experiment. But i only have lije 40 more rounds of subsonic, snd this ammo panic means no more is available for the forseeable future.

I bet that's a real pleasure to shoot. Need to start reloading. Not that components are any easier to find right now.

Yeah the cans are quite fun. Not sure what grn the subs are, didn't know anyone made subsonic 556/223? I know for 300blk the hot powders are lilgun and 1680. Hopefully you reload, maybe check loads for that out?

Biggest issue I would think with subsonic 223 is the lack of power down range, it would be a super short range round for game? Typically people keep even heavy bullet 300blk at 100yrds max?

Oh itll be a <100 yrd game for me. I like it close up. Hence the title of the thread, "thick timber" predator gun. I dont reload, just dont see enough reason too unless i wanted to shoot long range. At my distances, factory loads are just fine
