2016 Meatpole

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 04 24, 2016 •  [Post 1]

Figured it was time to make a place for our 2016 game harvests. ;). Here's the place to post up our 2016 Big Game critters whether they're taken with bow, rifle, smoke pole, hand cannon, spear, or slingshot.

The previous year meat poles are all located in the Archived Tips section if you wish to view them.

Wa spring bear. Was calling with a little rabbit blower and this sow snuck up behind me. Heard a tiny noise, looked and she was 10 yards away staring at me.
judging by tooth wear its an older sow in the 8-10 yr range. Surprised a wise old veteran fell for my crappy rabbit call!

I kilt me my first Merriam Turkey this year. See my profile pic. I was pretty stoked. I found it on my own, kilt it on my own, first time trying and those dang birds ain't easy to find with all the ground they can cover and all that is available to them in the Mtns. It was a real thrill even if he was still pretty much a Jake. Hope I find 'em again next Spring!

'Cause he asked me to. LOL Part of his backstage meet and greet routine is to send you home with a weird remember me photo. Sometimes he chokes....sometimes he gets choked. I felt kinda bad as I think I was into it a bit too much and could have gone lighter......LOL Great guy though.

So far 2016 has been a fairly strong year. Killed a small buck in February, followed by turkeys in March , April and May...10 total. Beard length added up to exactly 100 inches. All bowkills. Elk will be next and hopefully will kill at least one on my trip out west.

Labor day bull down. This guy came in to cow calls and stood broadside at 25 yards. Of course he had to run down hill and die in a steep, nasty jungle just to keep things interesting.

Great job folks, lots of full freezers this year and some wapiti hunt memories to last a lifetime! Unfortunately, I have nothing to add to the meat pole yet (perhaps the late WA season will be fruitful). My early season WA permit hunt provided opportunities but no harvest. My ID hunt provided very few close encounters this year so I may be in search of a new area for 2017. Both great hunts but no arrows found their mark. Again, congrats on all who have been successful this year (so far) and thanks for taking the time to share your pics and stories. I'm certain their are many more to come! RJ

If this actualy works you should be looking at my 2016 north Idaho diy bull and saying wow. That is what i thought when i walked up on him for the first time. For a couple of flatlander californians to be able to come up north every year and be able to get on elk is a true testimant to this forum and all who contribute. So first things first, THANK YOU. I have been following "ELKNUTS" tactics now for 4-5years and can truly say it is why we where so sucsesful this year. The information and knowledge he is willing to share with all who want to listen is priceless and very much appreciated. To all who have contributed and shared there stories and knowledge of these amazing creatures so freely on this forum it is from you that i have learned and become so confident in making decisions in the woods. I only get to spend the last 2 weeks of sept. each year with the elk so my time spent "lurking" around here is where i truly learn my way around elk. This year however we only spent 5 days in the woods(guess i'll have to do some extra "lurking" this year to cacth up). Our first day hunting brought this big guy 20 yards past my dad (he said he didnt see it) and 26 yards broadside past me(I saw it). I dont get to see alot of bulls that close so i wasnt quite sure what i was looking at but i knew he was at least a spike wich met my minimun requirement. My dad saw him when i shot and he turned and ran back past him at 20 yards again i was able to stop him at 50 yards from me but could not get another arrow in him. He was 35 yards from my dad but facing straight away from him so he wasnt able to get a shot. When i walked up to my dad he said sorry he didnt shoot but it was a bad angle so i asked him why he didnt shoot him at 20 yards broadside the first time he walked by and he said "I didnt see it". I told him "Well i did" and walked over to where the bull was when i shot and found my arrow with good blood. my dad had no idea i had even took a shot. As we waited it started to rain so we got on blood and the bull only went 80 yards. I cant even describe walking up on the bull of my life but this was for sure him.
I got this bull on Monday(our first day hunting) spent tuesday packing him out, took my dad back out on wedsnday and he killed a great 6x6. packed all day thursday and left camp on friday to head to my cousins house to take care of meat.Again wanted to THANK all of my teachers out there wich is you if you are reading this. Would love to send more pics. and the rest of the story just not sure if this is the right thread

Here is a couple more pics. The big bull was an 8x6 with mass that pics. dont do justice to. It was hard to get good pics. because he died in a big hole from a root ball and we could not move him without cutting him up. Sure would have loved to get some better pics. of him but we did what we could. It sure seemed like bulls love to make you work for them once they die. this one in a hole and my dads was upside down in his own horns. You really forget how big these animals are until you need to move them a couple of feet.

Truly a hunt we will never forget. WE got to hunt for 2 half days and pack meat and horns for 2 AND ahalf full days. For me the hunting part is what makes my year and it was extremely short this year. It was amazing to have family to share such great experiences with. My dad is 69 years old and made it to both kill sites but was not allowed to pack any meat. It was his first bull and i may have enjoyed packing his out more than mine(maybe).

Holy catfish Edward, a beast of a bull. And, to have your pop knock one down on the same hunt is absolutely what dreams are made of. Congrats to both you and your pop and a great hunt and fine bulls. And yes sir, please tell us more about your hunts in whichever forum you wish! RJ

Got my Nebraska Elk!

Missed a Monstrous Bull with Archery equipment first weekend of the season. Ended up shooting this young Bull with my Rifle at 70 yards a last light. By this time I was wearing out mentally and just ready to have the 2016 Elk season in the books. Great year for me - first Bull with a bow, first bull with a rifle. Smallest Bull (spike), biggest Bull. Enough Elk meat to share. Feel very fortunate indeed.

Hey all wanted to share the 14 years of waiting and 14 years of doing it all wrong. My once in a lifetime hunt.
This was self guided, hunted alone, and would like to think I was the reason (my calling) he came in looking for me.
With the help of Paul and all his videos along with his field guide book I was finally able to pull it all together this year.
Many times I thought what would Paul do at this time. Breeding sequence video helped me out for sure.
Also thanks to Brian an archery hunter that put his unit 61 hunt off for a day to help me pack my elk out.
One heck of a man if you ask me. I feel a little guilty now after knowing he was not able to fill his tag.
I hope that we have gained a life long friendship after bumping into each other enjoying the thrill of the sport.
I will never forget it and wish him nothing but great hunting. I can't say enough.
This was my first elk ever and my first bull. I do nothing but archery hunt so its taken a while.
I hope all the mess ups that happened over the 21 days will help me on the OTC market in the future.

August 22, 2016 will always be on my mind.

How cool is that (beautiful bow by the way). Always something I wanted to get into (TRAD archery). Dabbled in it when younger but never took the big dive. Makes the harvest something above special while using arrows you made yourself I'm sure.

+1 That's the coolest. That has to be a tough choice knowing it limits shots in a sport that gives you no guarantees that even with a compound you'll get a shot.

Oregon TK that is a geat picture with a beautiful bull. I'm with ishy it is hard enough with a compound and tons of practice but traditional. Wow. Good job.

Re: 2016 Meatpole

Postby TonyOI » 10 21, 2016 •  [Post 75]

I have been trying to make a post like this for 5 years now!! Seriously!! I haven't been able to connect in the past for a boat load of reasons that every other hunter is already aware of. I always get a OTC tag for archery then a cow rifle tag as my last opportunity for the year. This year I hunted 1st Rifle in Colorado and the second day of the season happened to be my day!

Quick Story- I got into elk pretty good on opening morning (Saturday) but just couldn't get a shot off (cleanly). I'm not one to just sling lead or throw arrows and hope for the best. I've learned this lesson the hard way in the past unfortunately and who really likes making the same mistake twice?! Anyways, Sunday morning I decided to go back to where they were on Saturday in hopes of the obvious. My plan was to just sit tight for most of the day and see if other hunters would push them around and hopefully in front of me. I woke up late Sunday morning like a goober so I literally ran through the woods to get to where I wanted to be at first light. I slowed way down once I got close to the area where I was going to sit. After easing into this bottom where it starts to open up I saw something out of the corner of my eye!!! Elk!!! The wind was not in my favor as I saw a lone cow feeding directly toward where my scent was blowing. I looked for other elk to blow me out... none (that I saw). I dropped my pack, pulled out my tripod and camera (I've been filming) and eased a little closer for some footage and a shot. I got to a lay down and assessed my lanes for an opportunity in hopes that she would continue on her same feeding path. I began to calm myself down. I get the fever pretty bad, on cows, does, bulls and bucks. It doesn't matter. It always gets me going and I LOVE IT!! After about 3 minutes of me filming and waiting for my shot she stepped and stopped in the first lane I had. I pushed my safety forward, got my breathing under control, picked my spot and slowly squeezed it off. YESSS!!!! She went down right there and expired very quickly! My shot was 65 yards and even though I knew it was over I gave her some time. I thanked the Lord for the opportunity to do what we do and for putting that beautiful animal in front of me. Then I called for backup!! A buddy came to help me pack her out after I had her in game bags. It took 8.5 hours after the shot till we got her back to the truck. We did it in 1 trip and I'm a little guy!! Worth every minute and second of the entire process and hard work it took to properly respect and honor this animal. I am very grateful for the little tid bits and large chunks of info and tips I've picked up from here.

Not to be preachy but I've truly tried to fill this tag for the last 5 years, on my own, on public land in CO. I always say, "there is only 1 guarantee that can be made in hunting, you won't kill one if you don't try." I told myself this throughout the previous season's lows. I have to try! You have to try! Hard work does pay off, then the real hard work begins!! Thanks for listening folks and best of luck to the remaining tags this year!! I am truly blessed!!

Tony

Went out last day of Bull in General and managed to Tag me a 6x5. Little bit of snow on the ground and some wind but was able to nail him at 571 yards. More meat in the freezer. Hit him in the lungs than managed to get a direct hit to the heart so he was down!!!! Thanks to my two brothers who have taken me out and helped me pull him up out of the canyon.

Some of you may laugh at this but suburban Eastern hunting at its best. (Not my most preferred hunting location, but easy to get out a lot). Small forky for the freezer, one buck tag and 4 doe tags left if I choose to use them all, plus a trip to PA with the rifle...

Spot the hunter...

Had a great year this year, hunted for 9 days with my daughter on a limited rifle elk tag, had numerous encounters with bulls, the closest was at 100 yards with a bugling bull. She caught a case of bull fever and missed just under him... But a great hunt with lots of firsts for her, first bugle heard, first time hearing wolves howling, first time hunting with her grandpa, and first time getting a truck stuck  I managed to get out on the general hunt and lucky enough to tag a spike. Also connected on a little mulie. Now time to help a buddy with a once in a lifetime moose hunt.

He's not big but he sure put the hurt on me with all the work I put in to it. What I really enjoyed was taking him with a SOCOM M1A .308 rifle with open sights at 110 yards. I learned a lot about elk in Montana and it seems like things are a little different than it was in the other states I've hunted in (Utah and Arizona).

Very awesome, great to see an M1A out there getting work done.[/quote]

Thanks guys, this is actually my very first elk by myself. I've only actually taken one other elk years ago and that was an assist. My dad made a tough shot and I had to finish the elk off with a second shot. Not only was this my first elk by myself but it was a diy hunt on public land around my new home in Montana using my short barreled M1A SOCOM 16 and I got the elk on election day - talk about a real humdinger of a hunt, nothing but firsts all the way around.

A couple days later I went back to the place where I took the shot and I impressed myself even more, I'm not sure if I got lucky or if I'm just a good shooter. The circle is where the elk was when I took the shot.

Lots of branches and uphill at about 30 degrees and 300 or so feet above my position.

The rifle is heavily modified with an aftermarket carbon fiber stock and a rail over the barrel. I removed the Nikon scope that day because of how close everything was.

Without optics the rifle weighs right at 7.5 lbs so it's pretty easy to carry in the field. I built it with the idea that I wanted a semi-auto with enough umph to take elk, moose, and bear out to a couple hundred yards and still be robust enough to be able to handle some field abuse without breaking down. I'm pretty happy with how it performed.

Oh, and by the way, I used my 168gr TTSX handloads and that elk dropped in his tracks. The bullet went right through the bottom of his heart. The bottom half of the heart looked like somebody had sliced it in to four sections with a knife. The bullet went completely through after perforating the offside rib without any expansion (the hole in the offside rib was perfectly round and the rib was not shattered).

Found this guy in the pines on the sixth day of the hunt. Conditions were hot and dry (Oct. 27) so we didn't spend much time taking pictures. Shot him at 1:15 pm and had him dressed and packed out by 6:30 pm. Pack out was work.... 3 guys, 2 miles, 2 trips, steep and brushy.

Western Colorado OTC Public Land. Lots of hunters and elk were scattered in small herds or singles.

We haven't had any new postings on the meat pole for a while.
So here is a pic!!
For a number of years my daughters and I were putting 100-125 geese in the freezer, more meat than most elk!
For the story check out the small game forum.

Dec. 29, OTC Arizona archery. Had been hunting for 3 days and not seeing much.

Was still hunting thru the Junipers and saw this guy at about 35 yards. Luckily the sun was in his eyes and he didn't see me. Ended up with a 26 yard shot. Not a giant , but it was my first archery mule deer and the freezer was empty.

So this isnt my kill, i was the caller, my friend the shooter. But im damn proud of it, and half the meat is mine, so im putting it on the meatpole. I generally dont like doing the "hero shot" grip and grin thing, but it felt right on this occasion. December 30th, stevens county, washington. Shot right at noon.

Hunting w my nephew and a friend who hunted this same RFW property in CO last year. Right after Thanksgiving 2016, my team found this double-drop buck the 1st afternoon we hunted. 3 days later, he was still the best buck out of over 100 seen, and we caught him chasing does. Hope he made a few love connections before I harvested him with my 2 amigos looking on. His genetics deserve to continue. He has nice mass, 8 total points including 2 drop points on the passenger side, and 7 points w a matching earring dropper on the driver's side. An OIL buck for me, thanks to my amigos.
