Full Moon Success!

Postby Rangerz » 09 17, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Buddy had a NV muzzleloader tag for early Sept. Went up the last week in Aug and started scouting. Found a lot of elk and even saw a herd of @ 300 one evening.

Season started slow. Talked to some archery guys including one young gentleman who got a 370 bull opening day. My buddy was getting discouraged because we would see Elk at first light and then in the evening, but nothing during the day. They would hole up in the Aspen thickets. Remembering the playbook and advice I've seen on here, I told him he needed to go in after them.

One night (the 8th) while heading back to camp, we stopped in a new area and I did a night location bugle. I hadn't even finished when a bull bugled back not 150 yds. away. We were able to see him in the binocs because of all the moon light.

A day and a half later my buddy spotted a group of cows and 3 bulls were fighting over them. He managed to get within about 75 yds. and started breaking branches and limbs and this bull came in to about 50 yds. when he fired.

Thanks to Elknut for the Playbook and all of the info from various posters on this site. Gave me a wealth of knowledge going into our 1st Elk hunt.

Nice bull! Congratulations. I love pics in the aspens. My last bull had white chalky bark all over his bases.

The full moon didn't affect our area the elk bugled the same as last year. The only difference was when you woke up at night a person didn't know if it was 2 Am or 7 Am. Man the moon was bright.

Nice job, great bull.

Around the end of Aug and 1st of Sept., we heard a lot of bugling and then it got quiet till around Sept. 9th. All except for one Bull we named Buglee because he talked all the time.

Then they went crazy again. Awesome experience to be out and hearing all the Elk chatter.
